Book Description

5 Jun 2008

Harry Ricks is a man who has lost everything.

A romantic mistake at the small American college where he used to teach has cost him his job and his marriage. And when the ensuing scandal threatens to completely destroy him, he flees to Paris.

He arrives in the French captial in the bleak midwinter, and ends up having to work as a night guard to make ends meet. Then Margit, a beautiful, mysterious stranger, walks into his life. But their passionate and intense relationship triggers a string of inexplicable events, and soon Harry finds himself in a nightmare from which there is no easy escape.

Review

"Nail-bitingly compulsive... A thumping good read. Kennedy has done it again" (The Times )

"An extraordinary tour de force" (Mail on Sunday )

"I ended up missing my stop to finish it" (Daily Telegraph )

"Classic Kennedy... extraordinarily compelling... Kennedy handles a morally complex, yet also surprisingly satisfying, ending with consummate skill, proving what a master he is" (Daily Mirror )

"A grim, claustrophobic atmosphere is layered with sleazy transactions and the emotional flaws of the characters. It's all neatly captured in Kennedy's sharp, shoot-from-the-hip prose" (Independent on Sunday )

Book Description

The acclaimed bestselling novel - now a major film starring Ethan Hawke and Kristin Scott Thomas - from the author of Five Days, The Moment and The Pursuit of Happiness. (20040315)

1.0 out of 5 stars NO NO NO 20 Aug 2007
By Ray
Format:Hardcover
I am a number one fan of Douglas Kennedy, so I am unhappy about saying this is rubbish. Kennedy still writes with great flair and certainly makes you turn pages. The problem is that having read 200 pages it begins to dawn on you what the basis of the story is and it's just plain silly.
If you loved 'The Pursuit of Happiness' don't read this - his next book might be better

4.0 out of 5 stars Never read DK before 28 Jun 2010
By AHA
Format:Paperback
I have never read anything by Douglas Kennedy before - and maybe after reading all these rotten reviews from his big fans I might not like his other books because I loved this one!
I liked the interplay between the moral story - keep away from your students and try and be nice to people - and the supernatural nastiness and thrills that go on and on.
I want to choose another of his that I might like - but if they are all about 'woman's journeys' then maybe I'll give them a miss.
Any recommendations?

1.0 out of 5 stars The Woman in the Fifth 8 Mar 2009
Format:Paperback
I was given this book to read. Douglas Kennedy is not an author I have read before. The book started well and the story built up and interesting mystery appeared to be on the cards, however the 'twist' was the worst that could have been contrived by author. I actually felt the book wasted my leisure time.
