Disappointing 31 May 2011
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Set in Paris, the plot revolves around an unlikable character, fleeing some at first unspecified personal crisis in America. The central characters are poorly drawn, unbelievable as well as unlikable. The Paris setting I found overstated and the writing sometimes clumsy. The ending is bizarre and was the final nail in the books coffin for me. Certainly he has written better books.

NO NO NO 20 Aug 2007
By Ray
Format:Hardcover
I am a number one fan of Douglas Kennedy, so I am unhappy about saying this is rubbish. Kennedy still writes with great flair and certainly makes you turn pages. The problem is that having read 200 pages it begins to dawn on you what the basis of the story is and it's just plain silly.
If you loved 'The Pursuit of Happiness' don't read this - his next book might be better

holiday read ...... 13 Aug 2010
By Banshee
Format:Paperback
I brought this book in Oxfam to take on holiday for beach reading. I usually take chick lit or thriller type books as easy holiday reads. I didn't know what to expect as I have not read this author before. I disagree with other reviews here, and thoroughly enjoyed it. It was different and interesting and kept me turning the pages anxiously. The idea was original and possibly slightly disturbing, and having spent some time in Paris recently, I felt like I was walking some of those streets again ........

I loved this so different from his other books and I hope you don't guess what the secret of the book is.

wrong classification
the reason this book is so disappointing is that instead of being a regular novel set in the real world it turns out to be a fantasy with a strong supernatural element. Read more
