Product Description

Lions and tigers and bears, the yellow brick road, gambolling midgets, warnings scrawled high above by a skywriting witch: No movie ever imprinted itself on young imaginations or endured in adult memory more than MGM's classic 1939 musical, and no movie score ever hooked as forcefully into our collective cultural memory. This exemplary soundtrack finally treats this deserved classic to a thoughtful and comprehensive rendering that confirms the enduring power of Harold Arlen's original music and E.Y. "Yip" Harburg's lyrics. On film, the songs unreeled as a mixture of discrete songs and multi-themed medleys with frequent reprises, a presentation preserved here, epitomised in the "Munchkinland Musical Sequence". If not as concise as Bobby McFerrin's legendary, hilarious concert compression of the entire musical story, this telling of The Wizard of Oz relives the film just as vividly. "Over the Rainbow" is presented here with multiple alternate takes, making it a must for fans of Judy Garland. --Sam Sutherland

This CD was fantastic value. It's the original film soundtrack and has the added bonus of not only including all your favourites from this classic film but also almost the complete film score. If you have a relative who loved the film this is an ideal present or if you are involved in a production or know someone who is, it will really support them.
Buy this and your guaranteed to be singing some where over the rainbow in less time than it takes to follow the yellow brick road !

5.0 out of 5 stars The one to buy 17 Jun 2011
Format:Audio CD
When writing reviews for Amazon, I first like to clarify the product as quite often there is confusion about different versions. There are numerous CDs of The Wizard Of Oz, they are with the exception of one taken from LPs and 78s. Depending on the care taken with the mastering they can sound ok or dreadful. The best one (This one) is the Rino/MGM version, released on Warners in the states, and Sony in the uk. There is minor differences in the front cover design, but they both have the same photo of Judy pointing an index finger in the air, behind the suprised lion, scarecrow and tin man.
The CD has been carefully re-mastered from the original tracks preserved in the MGM vaults, many of the songs are extended versions, there is even the odd out-take. There is a 12 page booklet about the film and music, and lots of photos. Its a shame they decided to issue the CD in mono, when the DVD/BluRay has 5.1 sound. (Yes even in 1939 movies were recorded on multiple tracks, then mixed down to mono for the film.
Anyway back to business, the sound in fine, you have all the songs, and a good bit of the background score. Buy this version and don't waste time on inferior products.

5.0 out of 5 stars Judy Garland 25 April 2009
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
This a the soundtrack to the classic Judy Garland movie which I think has stood the test of time well it looks a little dated but you have to remember it was written many years ago also so the writer wrote about his world not the world of today.

Plus none of the technnolgy we have was arounf to make it the film any better.

The songs are well known even song that did not make the final cut are like the Jigger Bug, which can be found on the Internet.

If you like the film this soundtrack give you more than just the movie songs it give song that were deleted and have only been found thanks to the Internet and studio vaults.
