Book Description

27 Aug 2004 Lackey, Mercedes
It just wasn't fair! Captain Pausert had foiled the deadliest of space pirates and eliminated the threat of the Worm World, yet his troubles just kept piling up. The Empress Haile herself sent him on a secret mission to stop the nanite plague, a self-aware disease that could devastate whole worlds. Then someone convinced the Imperial Fleet that he was actually a wanted criminal, which led to a battle leaving his ship in urgent need of repairs. And while Goth and the Leewit, two of the notorious witches of Karres, could do amazing things, ship repair was not in their line. There was only one thing to do - join the circus! An interstellar travelling circus, that is. All the galaxy loves a clown - as long as Pausen, Goth and the Leewit keep their disguise from slipping. The show must go on - or the galaxy is doomed!

a very good sequel to the much loved 'witches of karres'.
In it we meet our old friends Captain Pausert, Goth and the Leewit not to mention Sedmon and a troublesome vatch, continuing their adventures. I recommend that you read the witches of Karres first to get full enjoyment from this book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not a patch on the real thing, but enjoyable 12 Oct 2007

I was seduced by the two reviews below, with 5 stars each, and bought it - but I must say I am rather disappointed. It would be a reasonably enjoyable story if it was freestanding. And of course it is great to meet old friends like the Leewit and vatches. But compared to the fantastic Witches of Karres itself (5 stars without doubt!) this is rather weak. It comes over as disjointed, magic is used as an all-too-easy plot device, the story rambles on at times without going anywhere... it is af if each of the authors wrote a bit and then handed it on to the next one, without any overall editorial control, and that makes the book lack oompf. Schmitz himself wrote seamless and, in the case of WoK, almost flawless; this follow-up has the cracks showing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very good sequel to Witches of Karres 15 Jan 2006
By Mark
Format:Mass Market Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I loved the Witches of Karres, so when i saw this sequel about to be released, i preorder the hardback edition. Captain Pausert, Goth, and the Leewit have a mission and must reach the empress, but with a ship falling to pieces and a very annoyed bunch of pirates hot on their trail, getting there alive is far from a simple matter.

The captain's powers are increasing unpredictably causing problems for Goth and the Leewit. Goth is proud that her future husband (she still hasn't given up on that despite Pausert's misgivings) is "one mean witch", but travelling with someone so powerful can be trying, especially when he attracts the playful and often dangerous vatch. As a previous reviewer mentioned, you must read read the Witches of Karres first to get full enjoyment from this book. Many references to previous happenings will not make sense if you don't.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Wizard of Karres 29 Jan 2013

Interesting plot: a worthy sequel to 'The Witches of Karres'. They kept true to the characters and I hope that they can tell us more of the story of Goth and Captain Pausert.
I think that James Schmitz would have approved.
