There are so many things Joel Lane does well in this little book - then I read the last paragraph. I wish I hadn't. It mars everything that precedes it. Nothing in the story prepares us for it. Instead of recognizing what he's led us to, Lane leaves us with the sort of saccharin summation familiar to fans of THERE ARE MEN TOO GENTLE TO LIVE AMONG WOLVES. It's depressing. If you overlook those final sentences, this book is a solid Five Stars. But only without that last paragraph.
