More About the Author

I am an author and illustrator of children's picture books and comic novels. I've written and illustrated seven of my own books and illustrated over forty books by other authors. 'The Witch's Hand', my first written and illustrated title won the Austrian Children's Book Prize, was runner-up for The Mother Goose Award and was shortlisted for The Kate Greenaway Medal. 'Shhh!' written by Sally Grindley won The Children's Book Prize and was runner-up for the Smartie Prize.

I write for children aged two up to around eleven. My main inspiration for writing for children is a shared sense of mischief, a curiosity in all things and a sense of the ridiculous.

Due for publication in September is 'Keep Out - Bears About', a follow-up to the award winning picture book 'Shhh!'.

Synopsis

When George asks his father what the horrible, brown, crinkly thing is that's pinned to the wall of his study, Dad says he can't tell him because "It's too scary". Eventually, George persuades him to tell the strange and spooky tale. A hair-raising story for dark nights - with a comical twist.

5.0 out of 5 stars Scary - but no nightmares afterwards! 10 Oct 2003
By A Customer
Format:Hardcover
This is the absolute favourite bedtime story of my two boys aged 5 and 7. It's beautifully illustrated and full of suspense from one page until the next - will the the foul-breathed, green -toothed witch manage to put the children into her filthy sack before Mummy arrives with the witch-sword (the one in the broom-cupboard..)? Chldren will love being genuinely scared, parents will appreciate the tongue-in-cheek humour and the surprise ending means everybody can go to bed reassured!

4.0 out of 5 stars Cute story for Halloween 22 Nov 2013

Very cute story that shows a fun relationship between a boy and his creative dad. The scary part is actually the dad's made up story.
5.0 out of 5 stars Witches Hand has just the right amount of scary to thrill small children 5 Nov 2013
By Holly F. Homan - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I love this book! Although this has a different cover than I was familiar with. I used to check one out of the local library that showed the witches hand crawling out of the waste basket. Still, it was tons of fun to read with my kindergartners this year. This is a great story and very creative and dramatic. With just the right amount of "scary" to appeal to young children.
5.0 out of 5 stars great book for kids, especially boys 1 Jun 2011
By pjunie - Published on Amazon.com

We were first introduced to this book when my son was three and he loved it. He is now five and it continues to be a favorite, especially around Halloween. We love the descriptive language. An imaginative reader who is willing to do sound effects can really add to the experience. Kids love the trick ending and being able to claim, "I wasn't scared."
