Cleverly crafted. 5 Dec 2008
By Sterile
Format:Paperback
I have read others by Gillian White and found this to stand up as well as Copycat, Refuge and Night Visitor. The story is wholly believable and the charactors are well drawn from real life. You can just imagine Cheryl's Mother yelling abuse on the front street! The naivity of the young couple comes over realistically especially Cheryl's tentative grip on reality which has the reader wondering if she is losing her marbles or not.....

Sometimes a bit over long on descriptions and scenes, almost as if the author wants to make absolutely sure you have gotten the clues she has laid down for you.

All in all a good yarn - recommended.

Gripping but convoluted 21 April 2001
Format:Paperback
I stayed up all night to finish this book - it was so readable and I kept wanting to know what happened next. The story centres around Barry and Cheryl, a young, extremely poor couple who agree to become the subjects of a documentary about poverty. Though Cheryl is eager and dying for some attention, Barry is not so keen. Little do they know how they are going to be used and manipulated.

The interesting thing about this book was how my feelings for the main characters changed from chapter to chapter - especially with regard to Cheryl. At times she was so stupid I couldn't believe it, and at other times I felt really sorry for her. Though this is certainly a cautionary tale about how the media make us see things as they want us to see them, the plot did become quite implausible after a while. There were just too many incidents, and it was not too hard to guess who was behind it all. Still, if you can suspend disbelief, this is certainly a gripping story, and I would recommend it to anyone who has liked any of Gillian White's previous work.

The definition of a good thriller?.....I guess that could be summed up by the phrase "It has a good twist"
So does that mean that an excellent thriller has a double twist?......Guiding you along.....feeding you facts.....Aiming your attention on a particular character, then leading you away again.....maybe turning your head for just long enough that when the truth is revealed your stumped.....It's someone very different than you'd imagined!

If this is the case then, how would you describe a thriller that had you doubting every character......All of them!.......That gave you informative and descriptive views of each characters life, emotions, struggles......Had you believing in them all at some point and equally disbelieving in them at others? ..........You're mind darting through the chapters in turn accusing everyone you lay your eyes on.....Then just as you think it's all over and read through the last chapter....You're stumped again and, finally, when you have just about relaxed into the ending you flip the final pages and you are gobsmacked!
A thriller that could have you so involved, captivate your concentration so hard that you visualise each person......each scene.......each emotion......Just as if you are there, looking at them, standing amongst them.......running through their veins!
A rollercoaster that has you wanting to read on, even after the plot is finalised and the text has run out!

How would you describe a book that could do all that in just 30 chapters?

If you can think of an answer let me know 'cos right now I'm lost for words and the compliments "Excellent", "Outstanding", "Amazing" and "Intelligent" do not even begin to describe what I want to say about this book!
