When Craig Wells is killed in a car accident, the repercussions are greater than anyone had expected. His young mistress is pregnant and he’s left everything to her. His neglected wife Laura has not only lost a lot of the money she felt entitled to, but her confidence has slipped as well. Her son Ryan is in love with the wrong woman, and her grieving daughter is on the verge of anorexia.
Laura hears that her mother is ill, sells up and goes to England to help her father. There, she gradually finds her confidence again and gets a job as a housekeeper to Kit Mallinder, a well-known foreign correspondent who’s recovering from a serious accident. She’s very attracted to him, but he’s several years younger than she is and will surely want a family of his own one day?
A major crisis brings the whole family together again in England and forces them to resolve their differences. Will Laura be able to forgive her son and get close to the daughter, who resents her new relationship with Kit. And dare she trust her growing feelings for Kit?
From the Author
This is my second modern novel, a tale of family relationships and all their complications. It's also my 31st novel to be published. I really enjoy the change and challenge of writing modern novels - though I shan't abandon my historical tales either.
I'd had two story fragments for several years, but hadn't connected them into one story. I'd got Laura, hearing of her husband's death, finding it's left her with more problems than she'd expected. And then there was Kit, suddenly finding himself badly injured and facing a new sort of life, after an exciting life as a foreign correspondent.
One day I realised that Laura and Kit belonged together, and I immediately started 'seeing' scenes from the book. After that, you couldn't hold me back. My characters would wake me in the night to show me new scenes. I'd stop dead in the supermarket as it suddenly occurred to me what had to happen. Oh, the joy of it all!
Part-way through writing the book my husband and I went to England and we stayed in a bed and breakfast very similar to the one where Laura stays. In fact, the problems she encounters in the book are based on our real life experiences in a 'Faulty Towers' of a place.
Watch out for more modern novels. I've some other characters nagging at me . . .
Oh, and don't you just love the cover of the book, simple, elegant and exactly right, somehow? For those of you who didn't grow up in the north of England, the dandelion seedhead is familiarly called a 'dandelion clock' and you blow them to make wishes as the seeds float away.
