This is probably one of the most beautiful and well-produced art books of recent times. Inspiration for the book came while the artist was hand-rearing some orphan leverets. However, hares are a subject he knows intimately and portrays expertly with feeling, movement and vibrance. The pictures are stunning and have a depth seldom seen in wildlife art. Andrew Haslen's unusual use of light and shade makes his work unique and instantly recognisable. He has portrayed all his subjects with the same brilliance of colour. His pencil work is also outstanding and a selection of superb sketches further add to the book. Unlike many of the illustrative art books on the market, the Winter Hare has a mystical and fabulous quality. While the hares he depicts are the book's main subjects, the other creatures he has included, rook, kingfisher, thrush, dog, cat, cockerel, peregrine, woodcock, etc, are also superbly portrayed - a beautiful landscape featuring a nightjar by moon light is not only highly unusual, but also has an ethereal quality that perfectly captivates a sultry summer's night. A close-up of a fox in a snow storm adds humour, and there are wealth of other fabulous paintings and sketches throughout. Andrew Haslen has always managed to depict night time scenes as no other, and there are several in the book- all with his same magic quality. The Winter Hare is without doubt the best wildlife art book to emerge for a long time, and is set to become a popular addition to any collector's wildlife art library.
