I lost count of the number of times I read this wonderful book as a child, and would dearly love to get hold of a copy so that my own children have the opportunity to read it too.
The title says it all really - it is utterly enchanting!
The story revolves around a boy called Sebastian, who finds an extraordinary magical mirror. Through this, he enters a different world in which he meets Melissa, a beautiful girl in a long crimson dress. But she is a prisoner and desperately unhappy, so Sebastian resolves to rescue her. All the resourcefulness and courage he has employed up to this point are nothing when compared to what lies ahead for them both. With every turn of the page, further danger and evil await them. They are frightened (and so is the reader) but they are also brave and determined.
Victoria Walker's narrative keeps the reader well and truly hooked - it was my first experience of being unable to put a book down. Given the success of books like the Harry Potter series at the moment, it would seem madness not to reprint this book. It has all the ingredients that children are currently looking for in a book - magic, enchantment, adventure, good over evil etc. - and I feel sure it would sell by the thousand! Probably best suited to children of age 10-15, but I reckon a whole generation of age 30-40+ 'children' would be only to happy to be able to read this again! Somebody PLEASE put The Winter of Enchantment back on our shelves.
