Rory was afraid of winter's darkness. He always thought that monsters and demons of the dark might creep out from the shadows. So one day Rory makes a dragon of emerald green with a crest of brilliant red. The Winter Dragon comes to life to tell stories of dinosaurs and crocodiles, of knights and battles, and Rory grows brave. And as spring approaches, Rory sleeps peacefully and the Winter Dragon dreams of returning to his fiery home.
I'm Caroline Pitcher and I just love writing! I'm full of ideas for picture books - I write stories to be passed on to artists, who follow up with fine illustrations. My constant inspiration is the natural world, especially Greece and beautiful Derbyshire. I write stories to read aloud, comic books and novels for children and young adults. Sometimes I visit schools and festivals, and lead workshops. At any time I am writing two or three different books.
My books have won the Kathleen Fidler Award, chosen as the Independent Story of the Year, and been given Writers' Awards by the Arts Council and East Midlands Arts. They've been shortlisted for the Stockton and Portsmouth Awards, chosen as book of the month by Ottakars (remember them?), nominated for the Carnegie Medal, the Greenaway Award, the English Association 4-11 Award and the Children's Book Award.
