Product Description

In October 2000, film composer Hans Zimmer gave a concert as part of the Flanders Film Festival. The Wings of A Film--music being that which makes celluloid take flight--combines orchestra, rock instrumentalists and Zimmer himself on keyboards, preserving almost 72 minutes from the event in Ghent's Kuipken Concert Hall. Lisa Gerrard, whose vocals contributed significantly to the atmosphere of Gladiator, is reunited with Zimmer for a subdued version of that film's end title music. "Thunderbird" from Thelma and Louise allows the composer to fulfil his Pink Floyd fantasies, while the formal tuned percussion describing True Romance gives no clue to the film's ultra-violent nature. Rain Man offers a soft-rock lyricism which prefigures the warmth of "Nyah and Ethan" from Mission: Impossible II, "Journey to the Line" being an almost 10-minute adventure in slow-burning atmospherics from The Thin Red Line. With a track from The Power of One and two from The Lion King, virtually every style in Zimmer's repertoire (except for pulsating action music) is covered. The sound is good if sometimes a little cavernous and by necessity lacks Zimmer's usual hi-tec studio polish. --Gary S Dalkin

2.0 out of 5 stars Doesn't Meet Expectations 2 July 2002
By Leon L
Format:Audio CD
Unfortunately, what you have here is about 5 or 6 good tracks from the eccentric German and about 5 or 6 pants ones. If you could guess which tracks were going to be the outstanding ones - you would probably be right without even listening to the album. i.e. Gladiator, Thelma & Louise, Rain Man, Driving and True Romance.

Particularly disappointing tracks are the Lion King stuff. The title track from the film was as breathtaking as the opening animation from the Disney film. This is why Hans won his Oscar for the Lion King. Not for the Elton John-style clownish sounding "fun" songs he has included in his concert album.

My sound advice is go away and buy 4 or so different Hans Zimmer soundtracks like: Black Rain , MI2 Soundtrack, Broken Arrow, K2, Face Off etc. I know you're trying to save your money (like I did) and buy a compendium of live Hans classics. Unfortunately, you just can't buy a really GOOD Hans collection YET!

2.0 out of 5 stars Wings of Film 2 July 2002
By Leon L
Format:Audio CD
If, like me you're quite into Mr Hans, and have been ever since watching Black Rain and Days of Thunder then you may have thought oooh Wings of a Film - a compilation of splendid Hans Zimmer material - right? Wrong!

Don't get me wrong, its not crap. There are some obvious highlights (about 5 incl Gladiator, Driving, Rain Man, Thelma & Louise & True Romance) but the rest, in particular, the Lion King stuff is a bit pants.

My advice is save your money buy 4 or so superior Hans Zimmer soundtracks and avoid this album like the plague. Perhaps try Black Rain, K2, Broken Arrow or the Soundtrack to MI2?

2.0 out of 5 stars bland 13 July 2009
Format:Audio CD
This is not a good record.
I cannot reccommend it.
The music is bland and boring.
Many of the pieces fail to rise above a mixed indistinct jumble of sound,
but even those songs that have a recognisable tune, lack distinctiveness and depth leaving hardly any impression.

Very unremarkable and boring.
