Product Description

Product Description

The detailed account in English of Chablis, one of the great white wines of the world, and the wider vineyards of the Grand Auxerrois. Based on dozens of face-to-face interviews, it profiles more than 130 winegrowers, with tasting notes on their wines, and detailed accounts of their techniques and philosophies. Rosemary George, who has been visiting Chablis regularly for 30 years, gives a unique glimpse behind the scenes, revealing its history, landscape and vineyards. From famed Grand Cru to obscure minor appellations, she describes and appraises the wines and introduces their makers. Illustrated with more than 60 superb new colour photographs by Jon Wyand.

About the Author

Rosemary George, Master of Wine, has written books on the vineyards of New Zealand, Tuscany and Southern France, but Chablis was her first love. Indeed it brought her to prominence in the 1980s, when she won the major British wine-writing prizes, the Glenfiddich and André Simon Awards, in the same year. She was one of the first women to gain the MW distinction, has written for most of the international wine journals, and her books also reflect another love, walking and the countryside: she leads vineyard holidays in countries as diverse as France and South Africa. She has homes in London and Southern France, a region on whose wines she is an acknowledged expert.

An up to date survey of this region was needed and this concise guide provides it. There is a good survey of Chablis putting the wine into its historical context and charting its ups and downs over the centuries. The domaine profiles are informative (and provide a good balance of detail) as are the vintage notes. A very useful reference book and well written.
