Book Description

3 Nov 2011

When a storm sweeps through the country, Asa wakes up the next day to find that his town is almost unrecognisable - trees have fallen down, roofs have collapsed and debris lies everywhere. But amongst the debris in his back garden Asa makes an astounding discovery - the body of a small winged creature. A creature that looks very like a fairy.

Do fairies really exist? Asa embarks on a mission to find out. A mission that leads him to the lost journals of local eccentric Benjamin Tooth who, two hundred years earlier, claimed to have discovered the existence of fairies. What Asa reads in those journals takes him on a secret trip to Windvale Moor, where he discovers much more than he'd hoped to . . .

Review

Throughout this short and lovely book there are clues Crook knows exactly what he is doing ... And there are each and every one of the author's own illustrations, which are nigh-on outstanding. Mostly bold ink outlines with textured pencil shading (I think), they marry the slightly cartoonish with fine art, and show Crook could easily have had that as a career. But then there's the writing. He uses a style that is perfectly in tune with making an instant classic. Timeless in aspects, it s warm, brisk, no-nonsense and absolutely clear. It's funny without forcing out the jokes, involving while having a for-all-comers simplicity, and effective at everything it tries to do. So I'll come out with it. I've read books by TV celebrities and famous names trying something very different on for size (hello Craig Charles, Tim Burton). They've generally all underwhelmed. But the simple truth is that nobody will have expected a book this darned good to come from this source ... [A] quite beautiful book of charming lightheartedness, fine invention and warm, gripping drama. --The Bookbag

[A] little gem of vivid imagination, gentle humour and moral message ... An impressive debutwhich Crook has illustrated himself with atmospheric black and white drawings. Let's hope there's more to come. --Sally Morris, Daily Mail

[A] charming, finely produced little treasure, told with clarity, wit and lightness. --Nicolette Jones, Sunday Times

1.0 out of 5 stars Be more thoughtful 15 Nov 2012
Format:Hardcover
I bought this book for my daughter thinking it would be a nice fantasy story she would enjoy so imagine how I felt when she came to me upset about the reference to Father Christmas early on in the book. I'm REALLY cross about this. She is absolutely the right target market for this so why put something in which will cause such upset. I'd never have bought it if I had known.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great book... with a fatal (avoidable) flaw 29 Aug 2012
Format:Hardcover
I read this book to my six-year-old daughter, who enjoyed the story, asked lots of questions and loved the author's illustrations.
Unfortunately the publishers have missed its potentially fatal flaw. Early on in the book there's a paragraph that explodes the myth of Father Christmas. There really should be a warning, or it be taken out of the next edition. I had to very quickly change the character to the Tooth Fairy to protect my girl's innocence about Santa. I really couldn't back out of it any other way - children know when you're trying to cover something up. If I'd known beforehand I could have skipped the paragraph.
As it is she now knows there's no such thing as the Tooth Fairy - rather ironic in a book about fairies...
Otherwise a lovely book!

4.0 out of 5 stars Would have audioread but wanted to see Crook's artwork
Wanted to read Crook's debut. Wasn't disappointed, it's a lovely fairy story for children that isn't twee and has some nice illustrations drawn by the author.
