Product Description

Product Description

UK-based Greek saxophonist Vasilis Xenopoulos presents this special quintet adaptation of nine classic Big Band charts. Composers featured include Jimmy Giuffre, Neal Hefti and Sammy Nestico. He performs alongside outstanding UK musicians Steve Fishwick, Nigel Price, Bill Mudge and Pete Cater.

Vasilis formed his first quartet in 2005 and gradually established himself as one of London's best up and coming jazz saxophonists. He has worked with some of the leading musicians in the British jazz scene, such as Jim Mullen, Steve Waterman, Alan Barnes, Derek Nash, Bruce Adams, Martin Shaw, Nigel Price, Ray Gelato and many others, as well as international artists such as the pianist Hiromi.

Personnel: Vasilis Xenopoulos (tenor saxophonist), Steve Fishwick (trumpet), Nigel Price (guitar), Bill Mudge (Hammond organ), Pete Cater (drums)

(4 stars) A rising star from Hanwell via Athens, this outstanding young tenor saxophonist...whose beefy, extrovert style combines the best elements of Sal Nistico and Johnny Griffin is in sparkling form throughout...Fishwick's range and fluency is similarly distinctive, while Mudge, Cater and guitarist Price, whose unaccompanied chordal intro to Prelude to a Kiss is a gem, are further assets to a hard-swinging session. --Evening Standard, (Jack Massarik), March 14, 2014

Jimmy Giuffre's Four Brothers gets things off to a cracking start, and exemplifies an album packed with flair, excellent musicianship and a commitment to an earlier style of jazz that's delivered with respect for its creators and scant regard for nostalgia...a triumph. --LondonJazzNews, (Andy Boeckstaens), March 11, 2014
