I wasn't quite prepared for just how beautiful this film is. From reading other reviews, I was somewhat sceptical as to whether I would enjoy it. However, I am extremely pleased that I have it in my collection.
There isn't a lot of action, so if that is what you are seeking, you will be disappointed. That said, the story is in no way tedious or uninteresting. It focuses on the relationship between a soldier in WWII, being taught Japanese and his tutor, a beautiful, Japanese woman, with whom he falls in love.
Tragedy and heroism; happiness and desperation, but it is the story of so many people caught up in conflict and how life, itself, continues, even if it is to be cut short. War may do many things, but it cannot stop the other events of our lives and it cannot prevent human beings from loving.
With a beautiful soundtrack, stunning scenery and amazing colour, the print is of high quality, even on the larger screen. The soundtrack is excellent and the acting...... what else would you expect from none other than Dirk Bogarde? Not far off of perfection!
I recommend this film without reservation. I don't know if I can say I "enjoyed" it; perhaps I should say I "felt" it!!
