This is one of Gorey's oddest works, which is quite something given that he is a very strange author. The pictures are excellent, drawn in his inimitable style, and the nonsensical plot has sinister overtones. If you like Gorey, you'll certainly like this. If you're new to Gorey, you could plunge in at the deep end, or you could try "Amphigorey Also". "The Sopping Thursday" is excellent.

The illustrations are delightful as every, and very strange, as is the plot. The universe is a little more sinister than usual, especially the ending which will surprise and shock you, or amuse you, depending on how you look at things.

If you are new to Gorey, I'd advise something else, like "Amphigorey Also". If you love Gorey, you'll like this short and well-produced little book.

A tale for the Age of Uncertainty. 3 Jan 2007

If you have given up on trying to find meanings, or causes and effects, a Gorey book will be just right for you, and this is pne of his best.
Edward Gorey at His Best 6 Jan 2009
By Beaumont Hardy - Published on Amazon.com

The Willowdale Handcar is hilarious. The main characters inexplicably ride a handcar past all kinds of shocking and tragic scenes, about which they barely even comment. An underlying mystery develops but remains only vaguely resolved. Edward Gorey's characters are colorful and entertainingly odd.

Deliciously Absurd 11 Dec 2003
By J. Black - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
Those who know Edward Gorey know his humour is not for everyone. That said, for those who appreciate this shade of humour (often also fans of the likes of Tim Burton and Charles Addams), this will be a treat. I'll admit that I laughed myself silly with The Willowdale Handcart.
