This lovely book is a must for anyone who is a fan of The New Yorker (which was such a good home for Steig's art), and also of Shrek (who was invented by Steig). It is very informative, going far beyond the scope of a coffe table book and offering lots of food for thought... Steig lived a long and interesting life during some very interesting times; this book, often funny and so poignant at times, allows us to be part of 'culture-making' moments. Excellent.

Excellent book about a brilliant cartoonist - but! 30 April 2009
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
I highly recommend this book. It would be a great gift for anyone with kids or who is interested in art for children. Steig was one of the greatest cartoonists of the 20th century and this book showcases his juvenile art very well.

One warning, though: this book limits itself to works for or about children, and despite the title does not represent Steig's entire oeuvre of work.

I went to see the William Steig exhibition at the Jewish Museum in New York and I was fascinated by his art and humor. I wanted to buy the book right away but the store was closed, so I order it on Amazon and couldn't wait to receive it. I am very happy with this book. It's truly amazing and I highly recommend it.

GREAT BOOK BY THE MASTER 17 April 2013

Every page of this book is great. If you love William Steig, this is a lovely collection of his art. He's never published a bad book and this retrospective is lovely. A little light on New yorker art but a wide spectrum of his brilliant work.
Steig books are always delightful and even if written some years ago, are still delightful!! 30 April 2015

It is ridiciulous to rate the "author's writing" for this book!! It's a humor book.
