Book Description

29 Mar 2005
Few authors have made Victorian London as engaging and lively as Anne Perry has and her rich descriptions and charismatic characters have long captivated fans around the world. Now in one enticing volume, here are Anne Perry’s first three classic novels featuring private investigator William Monk.

His name, they tell him, is William Monk, and he is a London police detective. His memory vanished after a terrible accident, intent on hiding his condition and starting a new life, Monk tackles a grisly murder case in which each new revelation leads him to the answers he seeks but dreads to find. . . .

Called upon to investigate the brutal murder of a blue-blooded young widow, Monk is plagued by his lingering amnesia and an inept supervisor. But nurse Hester Latterly offers her assistance, and together they grope warily through the silence and shadows that obscure the aristocrat’s demise.

After a brilliant military career, General Thaddeus Carlyon meets his death not on the battlefield but at a London dinner party, and his wife confesses to the murder. But Monk and Hester Latterly suspect deceit, and with the trial only days away, they feverishly work to unravel the dark heart of the mystery.

5.0 out of 5 stars Enthralling 11 July 2008
I have read all three novels in this issue - all entralling and gripping - each with an unexpected twist. The author makes the characters very real to the reader and there have been times I have wanted to get hold of them and disturb their entrenched attitudes. William Monk is an excellent detective. His loss of memory is very poignant and well worked into the script. I recommend the book to all readers who enjoy a good mystery.

4.0 out of 5 stars Promises good things... 29 July 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I have as yet only read the first novel in this omnibus but I am already seduced by the complex character of detective William Monk and the impeccable and intelligent way in which the plot progresses. I can't say that I like everything in it but it is such a breath of fresh air to read a book that is intelligently narrated, well researched, very convincing and so atmospheric. Victorian London lives on the page and the reader is fast sucked into its world and navigates with ease among the elegant drawing rooms, the seedy streets, the rookeries or even the battlefields. I cannot wait to read more and I shall start on the second novel tonight. I just feel I won't be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars ANNE PERRY MONK MYSTERIES 29 Mar 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
A brilliant way of engaging the reader, both with the internal psychology of the main character and the external story. A great insight into a well-researched period of time with many of the social issues (such as the lack of rights held by married women, and the gradual introduction of different forms of transport and industrialisation). I read an American version - slightly irritating because of the difference in spelling - but clear typeface. However, all three were enjoyable and intriguing.
