Product Description

Product Description

Joe O'Leary, a successful survival skills instructor, explains the fundamental techniques required in a genuine 'wilderness survival situation' - while at the same time showing you how to enhance any out-of-doors experience, from a walk in the country to an ambitious camping expedition. Most types of shelter, animal trap and fire-lighting technique are variations on a theme. Joe keeps it simple and describes in straightforward steps what to do to make yourself safe and comfortable: how to build a shelter that will really keep you warm, set a trap that will really catch food, identify plants that will really feed and nourish you and build a fire that will really light in all weathers. Rather than trying to cover every eventuality, he concentrates on techniques that can be applied successfully in most environments: it's better to know a limited number of skills thoroughly than a whole host of different variations specific to particular kinds of terrain. Wilderness survival and bushcraft are thoroughly aspirational - even to incurable stay-at-homes. This book encourages the values of improvisation and self-reliance in extreme situations - a form of escapism enjoyed by most viewers of survival TV programmes.

About the Author

Joe O'Leary is thirty-six and lives in a cottage on the Wiltshire/Dorset border with his wife Clare, a number of dogs and cats and an ever-growing collection of various bags of sticks and twigs. He has been a soldier, carpenter, furniture maker and cafe owner but the one thing that has remained constant throughout his life is his passion for the great outdoors and an overwhelming desire to learn everything there is to know about self-reliance in the wilderness. He runs his own school, Wilderness Survival Skills.

I was bought this book by my mum as I have always had an interest in the outdoors. Normally the books she buys me are a bit boring but this was brilliant and I have already read it through twice! It gives all the information you need to survive and is very interesting to read. Have been making many more trip to the countryside and really enjoyed feeling like I know more about the great outdoors! Have even taught my friends a thing or two! Just read he does survival courses too? Will hopefully save up to go on one to put my new skills into practise.

Excellent read - informative, amusing and really well laid out. Everything explained in an easy to follow and very interesting way. Can be read through from cover to cover without being heavy going or can be read in chapters picked specifically about certain items of interest. Excellent value for money and I hope Joe O'Leary writes more books as he really is a talented author.

I was bought this as a birthday present by my girlfriend and it's been a revelation.

What a fantastic book. It's written in an easy to read conversational style but jam packed with everything you need to know about Wilderness Survival.

Joe has a wealth of knowledge which he has managed to get down in print and that is not always easy. Each paragraph is informative and precise without being patronising. As a complete novice I feel that the tips and advice would arm me with the confidence required to enjoy a safe trip to the great outdoors. This guide has certainly expired me toget off my butt!!!

I understand that Joe runs courses about everything Wilderness related and if this book is anything to go by I'll definately book up.

I would recommend this book to anyone interested in doing anything outside from survival to camping and trekking to expeditions.Buy it and you won't be disapointed.

Great Little Book BUT Beware of Binding
Great little book, very informative, lacking perhaps in illustrations (black and white line drawings only), but very readable format, so that's just being picky! Read more
