My stepson, normally only seduced by stories of dragons and knights, LOVED this book. We have read it more than any of his others. It is the quirky tale of seven washerwomen who rebel against their nasty boss and in doing so discover their wild sides...only to be tamed by seven woodcutters (but not in a conventional way). Such strong women characters, Quentin Blakes's artwork is always such a joy, and John Yeoman is a great writer - such a wonderful book. 'Gee up Lysander!'

A riot of a book, probably not "approved reading" - the washerwomen go on the rampage and wreck the town - but my 5-year-old loves this and can recite it all the way through. She has fun trying to assign the names to the different washerwomen and never tires of looking through the pictures. If this is not on your child's bookcase, make room for it. It will surely become a favourite.

This is a wonderful book, fun, characterful, anarchic and engaging. The story follows seven washwomen who throw off their bonds, run rampage and eventually settle down in the woods in an idyllic and anarchistic (in the best sense) non-standard family. Our 2 1/2 year old loves it. Highly recommended.
