In the decades following his emergence on the national scene in 1975, Bruce Springsteen proved to be that rarity among popular musicians, an artist who maintained his status as a frontline recording and performing star, consistently selling millions of albums and selling out arenas and stadiums around the world year after year, as well as retaining widespread ... 5.0 out of 5 stars A Lost Classic - The Springsteen I much prefer! 23 Nov 2006
Format:Audio CD
This is one of my favourite albums of all time! And everything that has been written by the other reviewers is correct - this is Bruce Springsteen's best album, it easily outshines his most successful albums ('Born to Run' and 'Born in the USA'), and it is sadly overlooked by the record buying public.

Just listen to the first three tracks - "E Street Shuffle", "4th Of July Asbury Park (Sandy)", and "Kitty's Back" - and realise what the world lost when Springsteen turned his back on the more jazzy side of his muse and focused on his rock leanings. And then listen to "Wild Billy's Circus Story" - possibly the saddest song ever written (and definitely the only one with the lyric "Elephants dance real funky") - and weep that this album isn't held in the same esteem as "Dark Side of the Moon" and "Sgt Pepper's". It really is that good - and it's the only Springsteen CD I can listen to all the way through without reaching for the skip button.

Do yourself a favour, get this CD in ya life: you won't regret it!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Bruce will have rich reward in heaven 7 Feb 2001
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
Really its all great but weeping lord, Rosalita is beyond words awesome. Being a bit of an ex grunge god and all round alt. rock man i got into the boss via Nebraska. But Rosalita just sums up everything good about Rock n Roll in a very short seven minutes and must be heard over and over and over and over again. Then listened to some more. God bless Bruce Springsteen, he'll get his own angel just for that one song.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Boss' Lost Masterpiece 17 July 2010
Format:Audio CD
"The Wild, The Innocent and the E Street Shuffle" is quite simply one of the greatest albums of all time - and the most underated. Eclipsed by the bigger successes of "Born To Run" and "Born In The USA" we get a rare glimpse into an artist trying to make it to the big time. What Springsteen does is a simple work of genius - by combining the different corners of American music; rock, jazz, folk, even to the verge of beat music; Springsteen creates a palette of Americana to paint a vivid carnival of New Jersey and New York, and the characters it inhabits. Stunning is not the right word for this. Every single track is masterpiece - from the get-up-and-dance rythm of "The E Street Shuffle" to the reflective and beautiful "4th of July, Asbury Park (Sandy) to the wild free form jazz rock of "Kitty's Back" - the songs are of stunning variety and quality. However it's the last three songs that really stand out in my mind - "Incident on 57th Street", "Rosalita (Come Out Tonight" and "New York City Serenade" are almost a suite of songs, soaring between moods and tempos, showing great confidence from this prototype E Street band. "Serenade" stands as one of my all time favourite Springsteen songs - epic scale, superb abigious lyrics and a stunning backing group - it all gels together so perfectly you wonder how he is going to top it, a true testament to Springsteen's ablitites as he continued to make records of equal quality, however this one is still my favourite. Please add to your record/CD/collection or ipod/mp3:)
