3.0 out of 5 stars LARP 12 July 2011
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
Plot. Set in the World of Live Action Role Playing (LARP) Erik goes after his girlfriend who has gone to a Larp camp.
I bought this thinking it was a horror film but it isn't. It was in the horror section but shouldn't have been.
The participants take the Viking playing very seriously and we see the fun and goings on in the first act in this drama thriller. Erik turns up looking for his bird and is made to dress in the garb. The girl had wanted to get out of the relationship and had left him because she felt stiffled and wanted some freedom, sort of. At the camp she has been taken "prisoner" by a big group of viking types. The second act takes a more ominous turn as the girl is tied up and things look nasty as she is about to be "sacrificed" and she gets stabbed but the knife is a retractable. A red herring before the crack changes as several people take things too far, including the guy who fancies her.
I knew nothing about this pasttime before I watched this film although at the back of my mind I was aware of the American Civil War enactments, so as I'd not seen a feature film about that, this was the first I'd seen and I found it to be quite entertaining. It then became a bit of a psychological thriller as play became serious and I think the film makers were trying to infuse some kind of danger into what was basically a fun pastime. In the UK I've seen news reports of Roundheads Versus Cavaliers and enactments of the battles. But none ever led to real death. So, to get back to this film I suppose they were trying to send a message that LARP is a game that is ok to play and take part in and forget about real life while doing so. Nobody should get hurt. While I thought this was an ok film I didn't like the way the way they concluded the film.
