Colonel Allen Faulkner (Burton) is secretly back in London to accept the task of reinstating an African leader deposed in a violent military coup, but without the combat skills of his two old friends, there isn t going to be a mission. With his two reliable loose cannons in place, Faulkner and the team enact a text book rescue operation but disaster is close at hand when the cynical multinational who set up the whole deal turns the tables, striking a new deal with the local despot which sees The Wild Geese trying to escape with their lives intact.

This is a great movie, the kind of "oldie but goldie" which is worth to be rediscovered many years after the first viewing.
It has a good and smart story, very good action scenes which impress even today, 30 years after and last but not least, a STELLAR casting. Just count - Richard Burton, Roger Moore, Richard Harris, Stewart Granger and Harry Kruger, in all five stars. And then Jack Watson, a less known actor, who plays Master Sergeant Sandy Young - and with his size and his face he is simply the perfect incarnation of sergeant masterdom.
The story describes a rescue operation in a fictif African country - a major mining company wants to save an imprisoned African leader, hoping that once he seizes the power he will give them favourable terms on mining concession. The story is very similar to the archifamous Frederick Forsythe's novel "Dogs of War". This movie is however much much better than the adaptation of "Dogs of war" with Christopher Walken, especially because, although quite tragic, it has also quite a lot of hilarious moments and one-liners, many of them delivered by the gay medic serving in the unit.

'The Wild Geese' is one of my favourite films and I watch it at least a couple of times a year. I first saw at the cinema when it was released, I loved it then, and it never fails to delight me now. Firstly, as I point out in the title of this review, it is a piece of cinema history, bringing together three giants of the British cinema in the 70s & 80s - Burton, Moore & Harris. Secondly, it is a cracking film in its own right. It never flags, has plenty of action, humour and most of all it just is such a good representation of the late 70s - Concorde, mercenaries, perms, you name it, it's got it. It's 'The Professionals' territory: shady government departments, shady big business deals , even the Mafia are thrown in. Wonderful. See it and enjoy it. It is rich in classic lines. Among my favourites are Burton saying to Harris 'Julius Limbani is alive!' 'I don't care!' Harris states. To which Burton replies 'Yes you do! If there's one African leader you do care about, it's Julius Limbani!'; Burton sinking a glass of red wine given him by Harris, pulling a face and saying 'Disgusting!' to which Harris replies 'Yes isn't it' and refills his glass; Jack Watson as the RSM at the beginning of the mercenaries' training - 'Right! Let's try for our first heart attack, shall we?'; Barry Foster giving Burton a telephone number 'at which I can always be reached' - oh, how did we manage in those days without mobiles!!!!??? I could go on and on. Suffice to say, a classic.

All too often we have films in which an array of 'stars' are present and because of that is lauded by the promotional people as being fantastic, whether the content of the film is actually coherent or merely an insult to the average intelligence. But The Wild Geese is both star studded and exceptionally good.
The 'stars' are reeled off one after another: Richard Burton, an icon in cinema, theatre and cinema, even though he's now been dead (as at the time of this review) 26 years; Richard Harris, Roger Moore, Hardy Kruger. Any film with these in it at the same time is worth checking over.
So why is it an exceptional film? At so many levels it ticks the boxes. Firstly, an surely the most important, it has a believable and coherent plot and doesn't vanish up its own backside or descend into ludicrous farce that so many action movies of the 80s onwards seemed to do. Secondly the supporting cast is excellent, from the pained and overwhelmed Julius Limbani, brilliantly played by Winston Ntshona, to the gruff, tough and utterly professional RSM Sandy Young (Jack Watson). We have Stewart Granger as the ruthless and heartless Sir Edward Matheson, the banker who sets into motion the mission to rescue Limbani from an African dictator.
Thirdly, of course, its an action movie and the African backdrop plays perfectly into the story as it unfolds. There's plenty of violence - in fact I was surprised at some of it as I'd seen it on TV many, many times before and this DVD shows the bits they cut out (for good reason!). Fourthly the movie is actually deeper than many of the one-dimensional war/action films that came after it. It explores the relationship between white and black in Africa, offering a possible solution only if the sins of the past and present are forgiven. It also examines the tragedy of war, how it affects the families of the combatants.
It also goes into friendship and betrayal, of disappointment, of resourcefulness and sacrifice. It really is a great story on so many levels and is absolutely a 5-star offering.
