Product Description

Product Description

Fantastic 2CD career retrospective from one of Ireland's premium contemporary performers. Over 25 years blending artistic triumph with personal tragedy, Mary Coughlan has drawn heavily from her legendary heroes across all genres - traditional folk, jazz, blues and torch-singing. From Billie Holiday's grievous, teary outpourings to the husky flirtations of Peggy Lee; from Van Morrison's soulful wails to the tortured chanteusery of Edith Piaf, Mary has taken inspiration and produced a body of work defiantly her own. Now here is a package offering all of the very best of Coughlan's artistry. CD1 is culled from 25 years of quite extraordinary studio recordings. "Ancient Rain", "Invisible To You" and "Man Of The World" are among the greatest of Mary's many great hits. CD2 offers the chance to enjoy Mary live, because the stage is where Mary comes alive, whether before an intimate, late night club audience or ten thousand festival revellers. It's hard to imagine a more succinct demonstration of both the raw and refined nature of Mary's talents.

For anybody who hasn't heard of Mary Coughlan buy this - the range and emotion in her voice puts her in a class of her own, in particular the live disc captures everything good about great singers. Been lucky to see her several times and she has never disppointed - her book is worth a read as well

Lierally a best of collection, although you might find the odd surprising omission. The second disc, made up of live material, whilst not as good as seeing the lady in concert, is a fine reminder of the way she makes a song her own. Absolutely brilliant!

This is an excellent compilation CD that is beautifully packaged. The first disc is just superb and the live disc shows why this artist is a legend.

I absolutely agree with the other reviewer, this is a great album. I am a fan of all Coughlan's albums and have bought them all over the past couple of decades. This 'best of' package provides well over an hours worth of tracks from all of her albums, hand picked by the artist herself. So why would someone who already has all of her albums buy this one. Firstly it has 20 of her best songs (actually 21 as CD1 contains a track which isn't listed). secondly, and for me most importantly the second CD of this set is a collection of live tracks, many of which she never recorded in the studio. Mary Coughlan is also one of those artists who, whilst excellent in the studio actually performs at an even higher level when in front of an audience. This woman has often been compared with Billie Holiday, sometimes for the wrong reasons (drug and alcohol problems) but also for the right reasons, a great and honest performer who sings from the heart. A cracking collection, over two hours worth of brilliance for under a tenner. If you get the chance go to see her live, she's stunning.

Whilst there is much to admire here the second cd is overly one paced and would have benefited from an increased selection of up tempo numbers-other than that the material is high quality on both cds
