Product Description

Product Description

Pete Townshend might have been the most articulate songwriter of his generation but like every other band of their era, The Who cut their teeth on cover versions which influenced how their sound developed. From their first gigs The Who were open to a wide range of influences including rhythm and blues, soul, country, jazz, surf, rock n roll and classical. And it's all here, in great sound and with a full explanation of what every track meant to The Who. At least three of the cover versions in this collection subsequently mutated into originals - see if you can spot them! This CD analyses the songs and styles that inspired The Who and includes a fully illustrated 24-page booklet.

5.0 out of 5 stars Musical Treasures That Inspired The Who 11 Mar 2014
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
The "Beginnings" series strikes again with another spectacular collection of original recordings that in this case inspired or influenced The Who. As with others in the series (6 Beatles collections, 2 on the Rolling Stones and one on The Kinks), the accompanying booklet has extremely thorough and welcome annotation. I applaud whomever performed the extensive research that resulted in these fascinating choices. Who knew that Keith Moon's "Cobwebs and Strange" was lifted from "Eastern Journey" a track on an obscure LP by drummer Tony Crombie? Wow! I hope that History of RnB Records is planning discs on The Yardbirds, The Animals and Jimi Hendrix as well.

Their other series, "How Britain Got the Blues", is every bit as good (if not better). Bravo to History of RnB Records for these releases and the outstanding music scholarship that accompanies them.

4.0 out of 5 stars Imagine going through Pete Townshend's record collection in 1963... 22 Feb 2014

Wow, can't believe I'm the first reviewer for this. Am I the first buyer? This is a great concept here, I understand there are others in this series.

This is not by The Who. I knew that when I bought it, but it is a bit of a deceptive piece of marketing to have their name twice on the cover. Maybe a better title would be "Beginnings: The Artists that Inspired The Who". Oh well, I hope everyone who buys this knows what they're getting. They are getting a very interesting, entertaining collection of the acts that directly influenced The Who, almost all of the songs here were covered by the band during their early years of performing.

Love Mose Alison's "Young Man Blues" on piano, Bo Diddley's "Roadrunner" and Howlin' Wolf's "Smoke Stack Lightnin'" just to name a few. If you're a Who fan, you'll like to hear the songs to compare the originals with the covers, but I also just enjoy it as a collection of great tunes from the late 50's and early 60's.
