4.0 out of 5 stars white rajah, an action romance 26 July 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is a romantic novel written when the british empire was still strong and in eveyone's mind
. The style and pace reflects this, but, written by a master, it tells a tale of love, jealosy, intreague, power struggles, and eventually murdelr. As in so many tales of this genre, there is a happy and slightly surprising finale, all in a land of mistery, on an island at the far flung edges of the empire. First read by me over 40 years ago, I still re-visit the island from time to time with the same enjoyment as the first reading.

1.0 out of 5 stars What was he thinking of? 14 July 2002
Format:Paperback
This is by far the weakest of the Nicholas Monsarrat books that I have so far read. One dimensional characters, extraordinarily gratuitous violence and none of the insights into human nature which characterised some of his earlier books such as the Story of Esther Costello or the Tribe That Lost It's Head. Save your time for other things.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Lesson On Leadership & Loyalty 11 Sep 2010
By W. Powell - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Wow, what a powerful story about leadership. A man leaves one home in disgrace and rediscovers his grace in an island he was meant to someday rule. Mr. Monsarrat must have been a man with many leadership qualites. It would take one with such strength to depict another of that like so convincingly. The author gave the lead character (Richard Marriott) just enough stubborness, wisdom, courage and compassion to make men envy him and women fall madly in love with him. Reading this story was like watching one of those cinemascope epics from days past, with a real hero. I really enjoyed getting lost between the pages of "The White Rajah." I look forward to reading another Nicholas Monsarrat book in the future.

3.0 out of 5 stars Fun, But Not Monsarrat's Best 4 Jun 2014
By Brian Abel Ragen - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The White Rajah is a fun read, if you can turn off any sensitivities you have developed on issues of race and, still more, sex. If you are left wondering about the historical White Rajahs--the Brookes of Sarawak--we can only hope for a readable version of their story. The part of Monsarrat's work that deserves to be remembered remains the books that grew out of his service in the Royal Navy during World War II, especially the first two-thirds of The a Cruel Sea.
