Book Description

9 Oct 2009
The White Kudu is the story of a legend which holds Abelshoop, a town in the Northern Cape of South africa in its thrall. When Joshua Hunter, a young English geologist arrives there in the late 1990's, he is immediately drawn, against his modern scientific convictions, into the compelling myth of a kudu yearling's impossible love for a star maiden. The native inhabitants welcome him as the prophesied stranger, who heralds the return of the white kudu, bringing an end to drought and hardship. The white farmers, on the other hand, see in him a threat, especially as his predecessor wreaked havoc in the community with a scandalous and tragiec affair. When his promising project is held up by the discovery of an ancient burial site, the situation is further complicated by the arrival of that predecessor's archaeologist daughter...

About the Author

Born in 1967 in Northern Cape of South Africa, English teacher Gisela Hoyle grew up on a cattle and game farm there. Thus began an interest in the relationship between people and the patch of earth they inhabit, which plays such an important part in The White Kudu. Interest in writing was sparked as an adult when Gisela gave a class of 17 year olds a sonnet assignment and they challenged her to write one too. In a long and varied teachng career she has aslo found that getting to know people invariably means gettting to know their stories, which is always fascinating, often moving and a profound gift to be given by others.

5.0 out of 5 stars An outstanding first novel 23 Oct 2009
Format:Paperback
The White Kudu leads the reader into the clash between the worlds of myth, ethnicity and big business in South Africa, in a sensitive and thought provoking way. The story is beautifully constructed, the characters carefully drawn in a style that is clear and descriptive and at times poetic. The myth of the white kudu resonates through the book.
Before I read the book I knew nothing of the mining industry in South Africa and I now feel informed in a balnced and sympathetic fashion.
An outstanding first novel. I hope it might be a contender for a new novel award.
