One of Lyn Andrews' first eight novels, transferring from the original publisher to Headline; already steady sellers, they will be targeted for a huge increase in sales

Cat Cleary is a sixteen-year-old Irish 'slummy' arriving in Liverpool to seek and make her fortune. Joe Calligan, a young steam-packet deckhand, think she's the loveliest girl he's ever seen and hasn't the heart to tell her that Liverpool is full of people tramping the streets looking for work. And then Cat sees the White Empress, the huge luxury liner. In that moment her ambition is born - to be chief stewardess on the world's great liner. In spite of her poverty, her lack of education, her family background, Cat Cleary sets about realising her incredible dream.

From the Back Cover

Cat Cleary - She was a sixteen-year-old Irish 'slummy', full of hope, arriving in Liverpool to seek and make her fortune - and become somebody in the world. Joe Calligan, the young steam-packet deckhand who'd stopped her going overboard, hadn’t the heart to tell her that Liverpool was full of people tramping the streets looking for work. He thought she was the loveliest girl he'd ever seen, and he couldn’t bear to see her crushed into the life of the Liverpool slums. And then Cat saw the White Empress - the huge luxury liner all ready to sail across the oceans - and from that moment her ambition was born - to be Chief Stewardess on the world's great liner. In spite of her poverty, her lack of education, her family background, Cat Cleary set about realising her incredible dream. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

This lovely book tells the tale of Cat Cleary and her family who move from the Slums of Ireland to Liverpool in search of making their fortune. Most of the story centers on Cat, her ambition, her loves and losses, but mostly her determination to, one day, work on the "White Empress" (a cruise liner)the most beautiful thing she has ever seen. I couldn't put this book down. It is a wonderful read.

If you have been trying to order this book from a store or community library, you may well have a long wait or not be able to get it at all because its out of print. I think 2nd hand is the only option.
Has for the story, as usual Lyn Andrew came up trumps. This was a great read, a little tentative as it was her first fictional novel, but well worth waiting months to get my hands on.

4.0 out of 5 stars The White Empress 3 April 2009

I enjoyed reading this Lyn Andrews book as the story is a little bit different from the usual 'slum girl makes' good as the story is set in and around a cruise ship as the title suggests.

Cat Cleary leaves the Irish slums determined to look for work in Liverpool and make something of her life. On the way over she meets deckhand Joe Calligan when he saves her life. He’s struck by her beauty, but when she tells him of her ambitions he can’t bear to dash her hopes by telling her there’s a lot of unemployment in Liverpool.

The story tells of her struggles, loves, traumas, hopes and ambitions. As always LynAndrews draws you into her stories. This is another page turner.

As an ex-MN Radio Officer it was an interesting read albeit a little before my time. Not enough of life on board but there again it wasn't about that only when the storyline crossed over to it and can only say I wasn't disappointed with Lyn Andrews' diligent background research into the material she writes. Enjoyed it!
