Product Description

Product Description

The northern European climate of rugged Scotland is too chilly to grow grapes, but it does support fields of barley and rushing streams of crystal waters, which combine to make outstanding whisky - well-aged, single-malt varieties connoisseurs throughout the world prize above all other distilled spirits (save for the cognacs and Armagnacs of France). This book presents Michael Jackson's broad knowledge and love of these whiskies with superb colour photographs of Scotland and its landscape. The French contend that the land dictates the kind of wine that its vines produce, and if this is true it follows that Scotland's whiskies will vary from one distillery to another depending on the qualities of the grain and water composing the final outcome. Michael Jackson, in his Malt Whisky Companion, was the first writer to describe in detail the aromas and flavors of Scotland's most famous product. In The Whiskies of Scotland he goes even deeper into the world of whisky, discussing the 'terroir' that shapes the many tastes of this classic liquor. Jackson's passion for Scotland and its whiskies comes through clearly and deliciously, and photographer Harry Cory Wright perfectly captures the places that Jackson so magically and lovingly describes.

About the Author

Dominic Roskrow, who has reviewed the text and updated the directory for this new edition, is a former editor of Whisky Magazine and author of Need to Know Whiskies. Just great 15 May 2012
Format:Hardcover
I have to say that it's been a while since I enjoyed a book so much. Michael Jackson takes you on a tour of Scotland, beginning in Glasgow and going clockwise round the islands, into Speyside and down the coast to Edinburgh, explaining how the locality of the distilleries affects the whiskies they produce. Poetically written, it's enthused me enough to start planning my own visits. Genuinely can't belive I'm the first to review this outstanding book (in the process I probably have learnt more about Scotland's geography than my Glaswegian girlfriend knows...)

The Whisky History Picture Book 4 Nov 2011
By Grant - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
By now you already know if you like scotch whisky. Now you are looking at this book because you want to know more than just that you like it. The pictures aren't of whisky in a glass or the bottle and label. They show a moment in the making of it or the scene where barley is harvested or a wave splashing by a seaside distillery.

Keep it on your scotch shelf or by the armchair you like to sit in when you sip a dram. More picture than text, the history of the product is brief and easily read without delving too deeply. Hold the glass to your nose and smell the malt and peat. Hold a sip on your tongue and look at the photos of landscape that brings you this treat of relaxation. The narrative reads quickly and moves lightly from one topic to another. Not a collection of reviews, this is more like a travelogue from a whisky tour.

I bought this book in November 2011. Previously, in January 2011, I purchased "Scotland and Its Whiskies (Hardcover)" and found out that this is the same book. The difference is mainly that the format of "The Whiskies of Scotland" is larger, pictures are cropped differently and text layout is slightly changed to accommodate the narrower pages. You can save a few dollars by picking the new edition. I'm a little disappointed but I guess someone will get the new one as a seasonal gift.
