If you've been buying these releases, then you'll know what to expect from series 5. There are some faces who were already established, like Roger Whitaker, Joseph Locke and The Swinging Blue Jeans. Then there's some acts that were on the verge of striking it big, like Cannon and Ball and Paul Daniels. And the remainder had their one chance at the big time and presumably sank without trace after their 15 minutes of fame.
This release is of particular interest for two reasons. One is that The Syd Lawrence Orchestra get an episode to themselves. Having watched Network's releases of Sez Les starring Les Dawson over recent years, I've grown rather fond of The Syd Lawrence Orchestra's frequent guest spots opposite Dawson, so here you have the opportunity to enjoy them in all their glory, belting out classic after classic.
The second item of major interest is the toe-curling Miss Nightclub 1977 beauty contest, hosted by Patrick Mower. This finds Mower in all his oily glory as he asks the most banal questions and not surprisingly gets pretty banal answers back. There are plenty of rather rough edits in this section, so it seems to have originally ran much longer, but was thankfully cut back. What remains still seems like an eternity, but has a strange fascination.
Overall then, this is a mixed bag, but the good outweighs the bad.
