By A Customer
Format:Paperback
I bought this book for my daughter when she was about 6yrs old. She is now 10 and we still read it regularly, it is an enchanting book of mystery and magical experience. Lilly leaves a gift for the whales and they reward her by coming to sing for her, or did she imagine it? decide for yourself. Go on read it, its wonderful.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent literacy hour resource 4 Jun 2010
Format:Paperback
I used this picture book with a class of Y3/4 children as part of our work on Stories set in imaginary worlds. The children loved the illustrations and the story. The descriptive language they produced in their own writing, based on this story, was far better than I expected. A beautiful book.

4.0 out of 5 stars A review from a classroom 4 Feb 2009
Format:Hardcover
The majority of us enjoyed reading this book, we thought it was imaginative and the descriptive language helped us with our work. The words used made it easy to picture what was happening in our heads. Although the story was lovely it also gave us the opposing view with the grumpy uncle saying it was nonsense. We liked learning about the characters and finding that they had different views. We found the part where Lily gives a gift fascinating and magical and really enjoyed finding out about whales.

4.0 out of 5 stars Magical, my son of 3, begs for this book. 23 Sep 1999
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
As my son is only 3 , I was initially worried about the passing reference to the killing of whales - in actual fact my son has no problem with this part of the story. He begs for this story to be read and loves the illustrations which are realistic and yet dream-like at the same time! It would appear that toddlers are more able to face the realities of life than parents think!

5.0 out of 5 stars Quite possibly my favourite book as a child 6 Dec 2009
Format:Paperback
I am 24 and I still have my copy of this book from being a child. I always loved the beautifully soft illustrations and gentle nature of the story.
I loved the relationship shared between Lily and her grandmother as it made me think of my own relationship with my grandma.
Even now the book never fails to give me goosebumps at the very end. I highly recomend this book to little girls especially but I think little boys and adults will thoroughly enjoy the read too. Its magic!
