Book Description

1 Aug 2010
Saki was the pen-name of Hector Hugh Munro, an author and playwright best known for his subtle and witty short stories. He wrote these Wonderland-inspired vignettes for the "Westminster Gazette", and in 1902 these were collected and published together as "The Westminster Alice". Saki's stories use Lewis Carroll's Wonderland to criticize and parody early twentieth-century British politics-and do so with great ingenuity and cleverness. Francis Carruthers Gould's astute illustrations add to the enjoyment. A preface and footnotes by John Alfred Spender and afterword by Hugh Cahill help guide the reader into understanding and appreciating the context of Saki's parodies-though the fun they make of politicians needs no explanation!

If you haven't discovered Saki, I'm sorry, but I suspect that some fans who encountered this book in an edition of collected works were a little puzzled because the text was published without the original illustrations or a little political background. While The Westminster Alice is available as a pdf through Google Books, it can be a litlte cumbersome to read and to enjoy. I still like getting books I like as physical artifacts so I can share and enjoy them. This edition includes a strong introduction, helpful notes, and a thoughtful concluding essay. But most of all, there is Saki's wicked brand of humor, clear reproductions of the original illustrations, and an hommage to Alice that parodies the author's contemporary politics with a sensitivity for the rhythms and expression of the Real Alice. Saki would go on to become one of the greatest writers in the genre of short story and alternate history (see When William Came) and that is clear here!
