This book has some great background on geology and history, and very useful planning information (such as what services are available where). Unfortunately the map lets it down - it is not very detailed and sometimes sacrifices accuracy for appearance - on several occasions we expected a campsite to come up a couple hours before it did because some landmark or campsite logo was a positioned a mile or two out. That said this is a small criticism, the map is only intended to be indicative - there is never any doubt about navigation as the Way is so well signposted. If I did it again I'd also buy a proper map to help with working out where you are and what time you'll arrive etc.

Pack One of These 7 April 2009
Format:Paperback
When taking on the challenge of the West Highland Way, I didn't expect a guidebook to be entirely necessary as the footpath is well marked over the 95 miles. I was wrong...and pleasantly surprised when I realised precious space in my backpack had not been wasted by carrying The West Highland Way 2008 guidebook. Being relatively new to long distance walks, the supplementary information and section overviews included in the book provided our group with great insight into what to expect from the days walking, helping us prepare and plan more effectively. Whether you're an enthusiast like myself or an experienced walker, The West Highland Way 2008 is a must have companion on what is an incredible journey through some of Scotland's most stunning scenery.
