Product Description

Product Description

This important piece of Australian fiction is republished for the first time as a Penguin Modern Classic. Elizabeth Jolley’s award-winning novel is presented in a fresh, new format that is a must-have for lovers of Australian literature.

Miss Hester Harper, middle-aged and eccentric, brings Katherine into her emotionally impoverished life. Together they sew, cook gourmet dishes for two, run the farm, make music and throw dirty dishes down the well. One night, driving along the deserted track that leads to the farm, they run into a mysterious creature. They heave the body from the roo bar and dump it into the farm's deep well. But the voice of the injured intruder will not be stilled and, most disturbing of all, the closer Katherine is drawn to the edge of the well, the farther away she gets from Hester.

By William Fross VINE™ VOICE
Format:Mass Market Paperback
I borrowed this from an Australian who told me it was a 'teen classic'. One can see why it's gained such an accolade: focused on two characters, a older spinster and her adopted daughter, it examines their relationship and psychology, and through various events reveals their motives and quirks. The well of the title is in the yard of their house, and what action there is in the book focuses around the well and what is inside. It serves as a metaphor for the girl's personality- and how her mother looks at and deals with her burgeoning adulthood. Its simpler style and unsubtle metaphors make it a 'teen' rather than a more general classic.
I found the book entertaining, but it is rather unsubtle in its examination of the characters' personalities. If you are looking for a twisty-turny plot this doesn't really provide: rather, it satisfies through the reality of the characters and the development of their views on life. I just wish that the author had shown us more of their attitudes and thoughts, rather than told us in so many words- if she had allowed her readers a bit more freedom in understanding and interpreting the characters, it might have had a less condescending feel. Better for teenagers as a result. Still, it made me think: and it's just the right length for the extent of its subject matter.
