Book Description

23 Feb 2012
Ted Taylor, 1st Battalion, The Rifle Brigade, was sent to France in May 1940 as part of Calais Force. Outnumbered by at least three to one they held out for 4 days against the might of the 10th Panzer Division until they finally ran out of ammunition and were forced to surrender. Nicknamed the 'The Weekend Trippers' as a joke because of their short time in France before they were captured, the next five years were certainly not funny as Ted found himself part of the huge slave labour force in Poland under the administration of Stalag XXA and Stalag XXB. Life in the POW camps bore little resemblance to the cheerful films of the 1950s and time spent in Majdanek Concentration Camp and a Polish salt mine were things Ted buried deep in his subconscious and never spoke about. 'The Weekend Trippers' is based on Ted's diaries written at the time. All the author royalties from each book sold will be going to the Rifles Benevolent Trust.

5.0 out of 5 stars the Weekend Trippers 6 Mar 2012
By BriChen
Format:Kindle Edition
I read The Weekend Trippers with an open mind, not fully realising at the time how deeply emotive it would be. The true story of Ted and his friends during the often forgotten battle for Calais was well written and seems very true to Ted's own diary account. For those that have watched PoW films like the Great Escape and wandered how those men survived, the story told in this book will have your jaw dropping in horror at what really happened on those death marches accross western europe to the camps in Poland.

Ted's story is not one of Heroe's - it is one of human spirit, human endurance and above all the survivor instinct. Ted, like so many was an extra ordinary 'ordinary young man'. I would reccomend this read in the highest possible terms. Well written, well researched and well done.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Weekend Trippers 8 Aug 2012

Having not read many books of this genre my idea of what happened in Calais and the POW camps probably came from fictional accounts and films like 'The Great Escape'. What I wasn't ready for was the truly moving account taken from Ted's diaries and Ted himself in later life. Although in places this is a difficult read due to the horrific treatment of the British POW's, both in the camps and on the long marches accross France & Poland it is also a testament to the triumph of the human spirit. I have not just recommended this book to friends and family, but have bought them copies to help ensure that Ted's story ( as well as thousands of his fellow british soldiers ), bravery and sheer will power will not be forgotten.
