John Piper's stimulates your trader's mind. He takes you through the trading business mentally and prepares you well, in logical stages, for a difficult and disciplined business. This book is especially good if you have done some trading before (even with very little experience), whether you have been a loser, winner or have come away at breakeven. It makes you feel good about yourself and that is one big important step towards successful trading. You will start to discover your own trading personality as you read, because Piper unveils all the psychological obstacles associated with trading. Once you recognise all these, then you will be able to deal with them effectively and positively whilst you are actually trading. It's good to read about another trader's actions and also experience those "trader's" emotion at the same time. At some point you will feel that you have a trading coach and you know you are not alone in this business (because that's exactly how you feel when you are trading).
He is an active trader and his experience shows in his writing. He teaches you what the market is telling you. He shares his common knowledge of how traders think (because he is one) when the market tells where it is going (or not going). He makes you aware of market behaviour and patterns, so you can them to your advantage. There is an excellent chapter near the end, which takes you through a two-week trading campaign, which Piper actually traded. The good thing about that reality is that his market position went wrong right from the beginning. Well it's good because it's what going to happen to you when you trade (at some point). Here he shows us how he "writes" options, adapts by using contra positions to cover himself and how he uses futures to hedge his positions, probably as a professional would do.
There are also many excellent examples of future's trading strategies. Piper continually emphasizes how important it is to use low-risk strategies and yet associates that with ample rewards. Excellent material, I can well recommend it.
