Format: Hardcover
To be honest, John Burningham has always been a bit of a mystery to me. His books are almost sparse, the storylines simple, but children always respond with such enthusiasm to his understated text and simple drawings and he really captures the make believe world children conjure up.

In this latest offering, a little girl called Sylvie thinks she glimpses a door in her bedroom that she had never noticed before. She finds it leads to the zoo and she begins to bring the animals back to her bedroom. Some of her visitors are naughty, others a little bit smelly and some simply too big; but she has to make sure the door is safely shut before she leaves for school in the morning. Until, one day, she forgets...

This is a lovely story to read aloud to children of nursery/reception age and would encourage writing/drawing activities and pretend play. Small children will love the idea of the familiar and the unusual, plus the illustrations will certainly make them laugh aloud. A lovely addition to any child's bookshelf.

Imagine if you found a secret door in your bedroom... One that led to a zoo! And you could bring the animals back with you.

Just like his other flight-of-fancy picture book 'The Magic Bed', children are encouraged to use their imaginations and allow themselves to dream magical things into their everyday world. Sylvia bathes the penguins, comforts an elephant, snuggles with a tiger.

My son was enraptured. I fully expect this will lead us to lots of imaginative play and scenarios.

The story is also easy to teas with not much yet per page but lovely illustrations to talk about in Burningham's signature style. It's a simple story with smile language as well so is very accessible.

I would say ages 2-5 will enjoy this. Also good for a class activity and scheme of work in nursery/Reception.

perfect for bedtime reading 27 Aug. 2014
By My2Cents - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
Imagination and curiosity get little Sylvie into a bit of trouble in John Burningham's, The Way to the Zoo. One day little Sylvie notices a mysterious door in her bedroom before drifting off to sleep. The next night, when she notices it once again, she decides to check it out.

Steps, a passageway, but to where? Flashlight in hand, she discovers not just one secret door, but two. When she opens the second door she discovers lots of different zoo animals checking her out. She couldn't resist inviting little bear back to her room to spend the night. Before school, she quickly returns him back to the zoo before anyone notices.

Soon one small zoo animal visitor becomes 2, 3 or 4, and she quickly learns some of them are quite messy, smelly and even one who likes to steal things. One day when Sylvie forgets to close the door to the zoo before heading off for school, she is unprepared for what happens next. She does learn a lesson though and will never forget to close the door again.

A very cute story, perfect for bedtime reading to your little ones. The text is nice and bold, and the watercolor illustrations are so cute and as well. I plan to check out more kids books by this talented author/illustrator.

Each night, she brings one or a few animals back with her to spend the night and returns them in the morning.
