It's fairly simple really. I can't see how music can get any better than this awesome dvd. A 68 minute feast of visual and musical entertainment - beautifully filmed and unrivalled by anything else I've ever listened to or watched! Go and see a doctor and check you're still alive if you can't appreciate just how good this is. Not only essential, but number one in my personal "Desert Island Discs". Buy it.

Masterpiece!!! 3 Oct 2006
Format:DVD
Another superb DVD to add to the PMG library...

It documents the seven members of the Pat Metheny Group's latest, most adventurous (and in my opinion BEST!) work 'The Way Up', performed live in Seoul, Korea, during April 2005.

When I saw the show in February 2005 at the Apollo, Hammersmith, I had the most intense musical experience of my life so far; laughing, crying, shouting and jumping up and down- a concert I will never forget. This DVD goes some way to vividly reminding me of that night, demonstrating the extraordinary musical power that these musicians are able to deploy to a very appeciative/fanatical audience, through their incredible music.

The film of the show is brilliantly shot, recorded and produced (produced by Steve Rodby, the PMG bass player) demonstrating the beautiful lighting and superb sound that the 'Group has on tour. Some of the close-ups you get are amazing, especially when you're watching someone like Pat, Antonio Sanchez (drums), Lyle Mays (keys) or Cuong Vu (trumpet) -or any of these guys -take flight on a solo. The level of musicianship at which these guys operate is just astounding- each member of the band plays several instruments other than their main instrument, and the performances they put in during this show frequently defy belief.

As well as featuring the entire piece's four 'movements', the DVD also has an excellent, in-depth interview with Pat Metheny himself, in which he talks about everything from the band's history to the artistic direction for the TWU Tour, to the technology the band uses on stage. Very interesting.

I've been waiting since early 2005 for this to come out, and, at last, here it is. Amazing, astounding, extraordinary, brilliant, adventurous, superb, intense, incredible - all words I have used in the above paragraphs, and all words that can easily be applied in spades to this great band and great DVD.

ps. this review is dedicated to RF of Bodiam, to whom I am greatly indebted for introducing me to Pat Metheny Group back in early 2003.

TWU The Movie! 1 Oct 2006
Format:DVD
Having attended the Utrecht performance of this "long form" piece by one of my favourite bands of all time, I couldn't wait to get my mitts on the DVD. Beautifully filmed, it captures the energy and utter craftmanship of each member of the band. Why only a 4-star rating? Curiously, the piece's eery fade-out on Part Three has been omitted, thus marring an otherwise perfect record of a monumental musical event. A few more "extras" would have been nice, though the interview with Pat is a nice addition.

Is this jazz?
This music is really easy to live with - that doesn't mean it's without its challenges. Those accostomed to Metheney & Mays will not be disappointed. Read more

Beware - Bootleg
This is not the official PMG DVD. It's a bootleg by the notorious Jazz Door label, taken from a Canadian TV production.
Do not buy.
