A Short Course for New Converts 8 Jun. 2013
By Austin Mansfield - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
This timely guide for Christian mentoring is simple to follow, yet powerfully profound. The Rev. Dr. Michael Green opens by reminding us that as Christians we have a deeper responsibility to new converts than merely directing them to the coffee and pastries after worship. There are many books discussing why one should become a Christian, and many books to further Christian knowledge for those seeking deeper theological insight, but The Way Forward reaches out to that forgotten niche: the recent convert to Christianity.

The first Christians got it right, Green points out, by focusing on the unity created through repentance, faith, receiving the Holy Spirit, and Baptism. From that unity develops fellowship, which Green describes as having three forms: 1) Personal Attention -- by an experienced Christian friend; 2) Small Groups -- demonstrated in the Book of Acts by a few disciples acting and venturing together -- one is rarely shown acting individually; 3) Wider Community -- the Church, the Body of Christ. In all forms of fellowship, prayer was a priority.

This short Christian Foundations Course is designed to help new believers grasp the basics of Christian faith in six parts: Commitment to Christ, Assurance, Growth, Christian Fellowship, the Holy Spirit, and Witness and Service. By limiting the course to these six topics, Green ensures the course is short enough duration to maintain interest yet deep enough to warrant the effort.

Although the content of the book focuses on the new Christian convert, the seasoned, experienced Christian is the one who would organize the six sessions. Hence Christian leaders, both lay and ordained, should read this book in order to prepare and guide the small group sessions. Green includes a short scripture verse to memorize for each session, and also a few discussion questions, in case you like having some ready to prime the conversation pump.

This informal guide to building better mentors in our parishes should be on every Christian's bookshelf. Though written by an Anglican priest, the perspective is on nurturing new Christians in their development, not in any particular denominational doctrine.
