The Way it is by Bruce Hornsby and the Range is a fantastic debut album that has only improved with age. `Discovered' by Huey Lewis and propelled to early success, it was this early commercial success that led to Bruce Hornsby establishing himself as a noteworthy song writer and enabling him to be less mainstream Song writer producer role, and less of a front man in later years. It is sometimes hard to believe but it now this was once considered chart music, can you imagine music like this breaking into the top40 these days?

This albums standard of song writing, radio friendly appeal and specifically the title track and Mandolin Rain were so strong that the debut album became the pinnacle of commercial success for Bruce Hornsby, so much so, that it overshadowed the equally prolific follow up Scenes from the Southside which did not sell as well. This set the trend for every subsequent album released by Bruce Hornsby as a solo artist or with the range, although it must be noted that later song writing collaborations with Don Henley on End of the Innocence served as a reminder of the quality of his song writing.

The Way it is without question a quality album by a quality artist, and speaking as a fan of the man and his band, if you buy this and the follow up Scenes from the Southside you have pretty much have all the Bruce Hornsby you will ever need. It may be AOR but it is AOR at its very best.

Fresh album, essential for all the fans that love Bruce Hornsby's Music. I've discovered it in 1987 and I felt i was going to became a fan for the rest of my live. There were two songs that impressed me and they were Mandolin Rain and The Way it is.

I recently bought this album 17 years after it's release in 1986. I was not disappointed. The singles, Every little kiss, The way it is, and Mandolin Rain are still played often on UK radio and still sound as fresh as when they were in the charts. I was pleased to find the other material on the album had the same superb piano playing and melodies as the more well known material. A superb album.

This is Bruce Hornsby's finest moment. It's an album with broad appeal, good keyboards, nice guitar work, infectious beats, and catchy well-sung songs. There's not a weak one in the set. This album is perfect for driving, or musing, or any other activity! Everyone has their favourite song on this album - it's a timeless classic.

Some things will never change; last night I did the washing up listening to 'The Way It Is', not the whole album, oh no, just the masterful title track over and again on repeat. The rest of the album is undoubtedly a tour de force, but in my eyes one track is king. Rarely have my ears chanced upon such melodic greatness, sweet as honey one minute, hard-hitting the next.
From the day I first heard this track on repeat, waking up one Tuesday morning with a hangover, 'The Way It Is' at top volume on it's endless loop, I have used this song as a catalyst to set me up for my day. Clearing the mind and refreshing the soul, Bruce's magnum opus 'The Way It Is' is like an elixir for mind and body.
God bless you Bruce. And thank you for your greatest gift, 'The Way It Is'.

Great sound both laid back & intricate weaving sounds around that gorgeous piano. Great songs and musicians, highly recommended.
