4.0 out of 5 stars Great Stories for an Important Cause 18 Jan 2011
By Alexandro C. Telander - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Last year a special man was involved in a tragic motorcycle accident where he sustained terrible injuries. His name was Frank Muller and he was one of the most renowned audiobook readers in the country. On February 2nd, Stephen King, Pat Conroy, John Grisham, and Peter Straub gathered together for a unique reading at New York's Town Hall, in honor of the Wavedancer Foundation, a charity specially created for Frank Muller.

John Grisham kicks off the evening, engaging the audience with his southern drawl, and reads an excerpt from his latest novel, The Summons. He is followed by Peter Straub, who reads from his own latest novel, written in collaboration with Stephen King, Black House. Then Stephen King announces that he was also going to be reading from Black House, but decided to read a short story that apparently always brought Frank Muller to tears of laughter; the story is "The Revenge of Lardass Hogan." It involves a pie-eating contest. Finally, Pat Conroy closes the night, soliloquizing on the art of writing in the most entertaining and hilarious manner.

All in all, a fabulous night to remember, and for those of use who could not make it there, it is now available in audiobook format for us to enjoy. All proceeds from the purchasing of this audiobook go to the Wavedancer Foundation.

1.0 out of 5 stars A good cause, but poor choices 26 Sep 2012
By danielx - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
This two hour recording contains excerpts of three works of fiction, read by their authors in front of a live audience. The venue was a benefit for a disabled actor/ audiobook reader, held in New York City. It would be hard to imagine a more unpleasant choice of stories and excerpts.

The event started with John Grisham reading the beginning of his novel "The Summons." In the excerpt, the main character arrives home to visit his aged father -- he finds the man napping in his chair, and eventually he realizes that the man is dead. After that inauspicious beginning comes Peter Straub, reading from "Black House" We're treated to an ugly image of a wild dog gnawing on the detached foot of what once was a little girl. The audience is dead silent, and were surely relieved when it was over. Stephen King then regaled the audience with "The Revenge of Lardass Hogan," a purposely disgusting story of a pie- eating contest in which all the characters vomit over one another. This one generated nervous laughter from at least some in the audience. Author Pat Conroy's subsequent chat about writing had the audience in stiches, perhaps as a catharsis from the evening ordeal; I found it mildly amusing. Granting the obvious fact that tastes differ, I'm afraid I can't recommend this small collection; indeed I wish I had not listened to it.

This is an interesting tape and worth listening to. The last story by Conroy was really good, I will be thinking about it for a while.
