Ursula Le Guin is widely known for her fantasy books describing the adventures of Ged the wizard (Earth Sea series) as well as science fiction books such as the Telling and the Left Hand of Darkness. What the casual reader of her fiction work may not know is that Ms Le Guin has published several books of literary criticism and critical thinking. This book is a collection of short pieces either already published or appearing for the first time. The pieces are divided in groups by theme. One of my favourite pieces is called Feet and is about, well Feet. The pieces can be whimsical, funny, insightful and in the case of those that talk about writing really inspiring. She not only knows her craft but is also willing to share this knowledge with us the readers as unpretentiously as possible. Finally I believe this is a must read for all women aspiring authors whether they delve in fantasy - science fiction or not.

I have tried to read everything that Ursula Le Guin has written since first coming across the Wizard of Earthsea about 40 years ago. Her books always stay in my mind after reading and this one was no exception.
She muses upon what it means to be a writer but also what it means to be a reader as well. As always she encourages the reader to take a new look at ideas that may have been left unchallenged or explored. If you like ideas and reading, this book is fun, stimulates thought and you get to share some of the thought processes of someone who is one of the great modern writers. If you have never read any Le Guin I'm not sure this is the best place to begin. Part of the pleasure of reading it for me was recognising themes she has explored in other books and in her fiction. A book that I'm sure I will continue to dip into and reread.

This is a collection of miscellaneous short pieces with no real theme and most of them are are not among le Guin's best writing. There are a few gems but they are buried in with a lot of lesser stuff. Shows that even the greatest living writer (IMHO) is capable of slight, trivial and self-indulgent musings.
