United Kingdom released, PAL/Region 2 DVD: LANGUAGES: English ( Dolby Digital Stereo ), SPECIAL FEATURES: Biographies, Box Set, Interactive Menu, Multi-DVD Set, Photo Gallery, Scene Access, SYNOPSIS: Undoubtedly the "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" of its day, the classic cult TV series 'The Water Margin' is a timeless epic and very much a touchstone for anybody who grew up in the mid-to-late 70s. Now, for the first time ever, the entire 26-episode serial is being made available on this complete DVD box set. It is ancient China, one thousand years ago; the time of the Tsung Dynasty. A cruel and corrupt government has driven many upright, law-abiding citizens to rebel, becoming outlaws determined to end the tyranny of their unscrupulous and murderous leader Kao Chiu (Kei Sato). A renegade force of "nine dozen heroes" is forced to hide out in the water margins of Liang Shan Po where, steadily growing in strength, they plot to overthrow their oppressors. Struggling to maintain his honour and nobility, former army officer Lin Chung (Atsuo Nakamura) becomes the reluctant driving force behind the rebellious band of brothers as they embark on their epic and heroic fight for liberty. Adapted from the famous Chinese folk legend, 'The Water Margin' was translated and dubbed for the English market by the production team responsible for "Monkey" and featured the vocal talents of Miriam Margolyes (Harry Potter And The Chamber Of Secrets), David Collings (the voice of Monkey) and as narrator, Burt Kwouk (Kiss Of The Dragon; Cato in the Pink Panther films). Originally screened to tremendous acclaim on British television by the BBC in 1976, the series combined dazzling, Kurosawa-inspired sword fighting action, high-flying sorcery and superlative special effects with a compelling blend of imagination, mysticism, wisdom and philosophy....The Water Margin - Complete Series - 13-DVD Box Set ( The Water Margin - The Complete Series )

I loved this series when it was aired on BBC2 after the Goodies, I watched it right to the end, I bought the first two VHS videos when they were released and realised about 5 minutes has been cut from each episode, mainly the fight scenes. They cut out the scene where Lin Chung's wife is killed, with her blood flowing into the water, then they show the scene in the recap for the beginning of the next episode! The fantastic Battle of the river of the Dead is completely edited out but again you ger a few seconds in the recap for the next episode. The fight between Hu San Niang and her sister is also completely gone, among many other scenes which really makes a mess of the series. I remember they reran the series on BBC 2 in 1982/83 about 5 p.m. and these scenes were cut for the junior audience, it looks like they have just transferred this onto tape. I was really disappointed when it was released on DVD as I thought the scenes would have been replaced, like they did with Enter the Dragon but no, it's still the cut version. Worth watching if like me you were a big fan of the series and it's the only way to see it but it's a shame the whole series was not released unedited. Very disappointing.

The Water Margin.
Once I was too lazy to switch over the TV channel from the Goodies way back in the 1970s. That wonderfully fortunate piece of laziness has caught up with me now as I type this. Of course the Water Margin followed the Goodies and I was hooked. My brother & I spent the rest of the week repeating and joking about the previous episode. Robin Hood in China? no, its 9 dozen times more fun than that. 30 years+ later I had to acquire the series, and the August rain of 2008 was dispelled as both myself & my son watched this. I was relishing a nostalgic trip; he was pointing out all the shaky sets, the times the Heros 'fell' against the camera; the times the sets flexed a little too much. So we both enjoyed this enormously. At the end of it all I finally got to see the end of the 2nd series: incredibly I missed that the first time around. and have been unfulfilled until now.

The program is excellent for its philosphy: voiced by the wonderful Burt Kwouk. If you dont expect too much you wont be disappointed with this. Price is a bit much but i challenge you to buy the first series and not want to get the end. Maybe like me and my brother, you too will quote lines 25 years later. Maybe you will kill your brother with some reverse philosophy and get on with your life. But if you miss this then you will only get very wet in the next British summer.

Oh. Just buy it.

It took me almost 30 years to find the full series and i cherrish this box set deeply. I received it in the mail last week and within a week I have seen all 26 episodes again and love them. It was well worth the wait. I know the video is converted VHS and there are no real "extra's" on the dvd's but is suits the series. Simple and straight forward entertaiment. This box is one of the pearls in my collection and i will pass it on from father to son!

As a child of the 80s I recall seeing this in an apparently never ending cycle. Well not as long as Mahabharata I admit. I loved it then and the cheesy nostalgia trip was worth it. Read more
