Product Description

Product Description

"The Water Hole" is a fusion of counting book, puzzle book, storybook and art book. Graeme Base takes the reader on a journey of discovery, from the plains of Africa and the jungles of the Amazon to the woodlands of North America and the deserts of the Australian outback. As one rhino gives way to two tigers, with three toucans waiting in the wings, the tale unfolds on many levels. Page by page the numbers increase as the animals come to their water hole to drink. But at the same time, the cast of frogs frolicking by the water hole is diminishing. What is going on?

"Graeme Base's picture books sparkle with the spirit of their creator," says the Boston Sunday Herald. Graeme Base lives in Melbourne, Australia.

'THE WATER HOLE' is the latest work of Australian artist/writer Graeme Base. This is the 6th picture book he has created and it is pritty obvious just from the cover, how incredibly detailed his illustrations are.

The book is aimed as a counting aid for 5-9 year olds, introducing them to creatures from every continent and far more besides. On top of this other animals from each continent are hidden within the picture, cleverly concealed within tree-branches, grasses ect. This should keep slightly older children amused for ages.

To say it is a 'counting book' doesn't really do it justice. Not only will it facinate younger kids, in awe of the animals, it will entertain parents and is useful for art projects--it can be enjoyed by anyone of any age. I strongly recommend this book.

If you like this try...
ANIMALIA (by the same author) which took him 3 years to complete.

This time I bought this book as a present as my son has had a copy for a couple of years (he is now 3.5yrs) and we still get to use it for bed time reading. There are a few animals that remain elusively hidden on the pages and it took determined effort from both small child and parents alike to find them all. The book is stunningly illustrated so just beautiful to look at and we use it a little like a geography book saying that these are the animals in the Place where so and so live. Timeless and ageless, would recommend this book for children 1-10 in the knowledge that everyone with a little time to spare would enjoy it

Just Great! 4 May 2009

This is a truly beautiful book. It was recommended on a course I attended for encouraging maths in a pre-school setting. Not only are there numbers involved but the water hole gradually gets smaller (mathematical language more/less) and the lovely illustrations introduce lots of things to talk about including animals, environment, countries, water. There are lots of hidden animals within the illustrations too so lots to encourage children to really look into the book. I actually ended up buying the book for my 3 yr old! I would definitely buy this book for any child.
