Product Description

It's Hong Kong in August and DI John Chambers is feeling the heat. The trail of the murder suspect he followed to Hong Kong has gone cold, his boss wants him back in London and another dead body has turned up in Mong Kok.

Meanwhile, his attraction to Detective Lucy Li isn’t helping his usually impressive powers of deduction.

Hong Kong — 2011: A killer documents the elaborate preparations, murders and subsequent media coverage of the gruesome crimes. DI Chambers, seconded to the Hong Kong police, teams up with local Detective Li, to search for the prime suspect. In the process they inadvertently discovering links between a seemingly random spate of deaths. The victims include a young man bludgeoned to death in Kowloon Park’s aviary; a minor Triad found drowned in his bathtub in Mong Kok surrounded by dead rats; and the body of an ex-soldier discovered near a secluded beach on Lantau Island close to a herd of feral water buffalo.

Can Chambers and Li discover the killer’s identity before it's too late? Will the maniac dare to claim another victim at the Chinese New Year celebrations that mark the beginning of the year of the Water Dragon?

About the Author

Andrew Woodward was born in London to Scottish parents. He travelled extensively before settling down to reside in Sydney, Australia for over a decade. However, his desire to seek new challenges led him to a short sojourn in the deserts of the Middle East before finding his true calling as an author in Hong Kong. That fascinating city is also the location for his debut novel, The Water Dragon featuring DI Chambers. Andrew released the sequel, The Fire Walker, set in Scotland in mid-2012. The third installment of the DI Chambers series - The Silverbird's Sign, set in Hong Kong and sub-Saharan Africa (released Jan 2013), is a continuation of the author's split narrative approach. His writing style in the first two novels encompassed the traditional thriller and detective mode of writing, while his third novel saw him switch to the classic whodunnit plot line. The combination of murder-mystery with a rich and evocative travel writing style help to bring the settings to the fore, making the locations an integral part of the narrative that add a depth and reality rarely found in the genre.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not the worst but far from the best 1 Jan 2013

A fairly laboured story that I managed to work out about halfway through. Plenty of references to locations in Hong Kong that will be familiar to anyone who has visited, but I was disappointed with the ending and the relationship between the two central characters which didn't really go anywhere.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Water Dragon 10 May 2011

I've just finished this book and feel I have to put in my two penneth. This was a thriller which kept me entertained and an impressively well researched book of the area (I lived in Hong Kong for 2 years). Clever and gripping, would recommend to anyone, especially if they've been or are thinking of going to Hong Kong.
The start of a series? Enjoy.

I really enjoyed this book. It settings and customs were very well researched and painted a wonderful picture of Hong Kong. More importantly the story of murderer and detective kept me involved right to the end. Is this the beginning of a series? I shall definitely be looking out for more from this author.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great read! 15 May 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
A fast-paced, page-turning thriller that cleverly weaves suspense and gory visions of the fruits of a serial killer's labors with a sweet and hopeful romance. I found myself certain at many times of who the killer was throughout the book, only to change my mind as the latest clues were revealed. The ending not only kept me speeding through to the end to uncover the identity of the killer, but also kept me up late at night as I could not put it down. Recommend this read for when you have some quality, uninterrupted time to lose yourself in the world woven by Woodward's characters.

A really enjoyable charge around Hong Kong and its islands. Well thought out, well written, lots of interesting details and locations. Chambers and Li are thrown together and do their best to out-guess a murderer on a mission. I bought the pc edition, and got so engrossed the batteries on my laptop ran out. Looking forward to the sequel, 4 stars for The Water Dragon.

Living in Hong Kong, there's never a day I will imagine murders happening so close to me.
With the detailed, vivid descriptions from the author, I feel like everything is happening right round the corner. The storyline is cleverly planned. This book is really a pager turner which kept me awake all night long. Hopefully it wont be a long wait before the follow up.
