Book Description

11 Dec 2008

Lieutenant Jonathan Stride has never forgotten the case that made him decide to join the police force. Back in the 1970s, Laura - sister of Stride's girlfriend - was murdered. The obvious suspect was a vagrant, who slipped through the hands of the police, including Stride's detective hero Roy. Now, though, Stride's looking at the case in a new light. Tish Verdure, an old friend of Laura's, has come home, and she's certain that the killer was a local boy, now an attorney with connections at the highest level. Stride's soon convinced that there was a deliberate decision to direct the investigation towards a simple solution and away from Tish's suggested perpetrator, but he's also sure that Tish is hiding a secret about the past. A secret that could have shattering consequences - including a second murder...

More About the Author

Brian Freeman is an international bestselling author of psychological suspense novels, including the Jonathan Stride series. His books have been sold in 46 countries and 20 languages and have appeared as Main Selections in the Literary Guild and the Book of the Month Club. His settings in the bleak, frozen landscape of Duluth, Minnesota, and his deeply complex characters, have drawn comparisons to Swedish noir. His latest novel is THE COLD NOWHERE.

His seventh novel SPILLED BLOOD won the prestigious award for Best Hardcover Novel in the annual Thriller Awards given out by the International Thriller Writers organization, and his fifth novel THE BURYING PLACE was a finalist for the same award. His debut thriller, IMMORAL, won the Macavity Award for Best First Novel and was a nominee for the Edgar, Dagger, Anthony, and Barry Awards. It was named International Book of the Month by book clubs around the world, a distinction shared with authors such as Harlan Coben, Karin Slaughter, and Lisa Unger. His novel STRIPPED was named one of the top 10 mysteries of the year by the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.

"Freeman just keeps outdoing himself with each book," said the starred review of his third novel STALKED in Library Journal. Publishers Weekly similarly gave a starred review to Freeman's fourth novel, IN THE DARK, calling it his best book yet, "harrowing and heartrending."

Upon the release of THE BURYING PLACE in the UK, London's Daily Mail called Freeman their discovery of the year in crime fiction and said of the book: "Fleshed-out characters, high tension and terrifying twists put Freeman up there with Harlan Coben in the psychological crime stratosphere."

Brian's sixth book THE BONE HOUSE was his first stand-alone novel, featuring all-new characters and another remote Midwest setting in Door County, Wisconsin. THE BONE HOUSE was a finalist for an Audie Award (Best Audiobook of the Year) in Thriller/Suspense and a finalist for the Minnesota Book Award.

His seventh book was the award-winning SPILLED BLOOD, a stand-alone set amid the dirt roads and ghost towns of southwestern Minnesota. #1 bestselling author Lisa Gardner says: "Spilled Blood is everything a great suspense novel should be: gripping, shocking, and moving. Brian Freeman proves once again he's a master of psychological suspense."

Freeman's newest book is THE COLD NOWHERE, which features the long-awaited return of his series hero, Jonathan Stride.

In addition to his suspense series, Freeman is also the co-author of THE AGENCY (2009) under the pen name "Ally O'Brien." THE AGENCY is Janet Evanovich meets The Devil Wears Prada, a light and sexy satire of the publishing industry that received favorable reviews in People Magazine and Entertainment Weekly, among others.

Freeman was born in Chicago and grew up in San Mateo, California, before moving to Minnesota. You can write to him at brian@bfreemanbooks.com and find him on Facebook or Twitter by clicking the links at his web site (www.bfreemanbooks.com).

Review

'Edgar-finalist Freeman's fourth thriller to feature Duluth, Minn., police lieutenant Jonathan Stride (after Stalked) may be his most ambitious--and accomplished--work to date... Powered by darkly poetic atmospherics and deep character development (especially Stride, whose understated intensity, dignity and resilience are emblematic of the Twin Ports area itself), this harrowing and heartrending novel will leave readers guessing until the very last pages' (Publishers Weekly)

'His most ambitious - and accomplished - work to date' (Publishers Weekly)

'Powered by darkly poetic atmopherics and deep character development (especially Stride, whose understated intensity, dignity and resilience are emblematic of the Twin Ports area itself), this harrowing and heartrending novel will leave readers guessing until the very last pages' (Publishers Weekly)

'The writer finishes each chapter with a dramatic sentence that compels you to turn the next page to the final gripping conclusion' (Launceston Examiner, Australia)

'An author returns to her home town to write a book about a 30-year-old unsolved murder and stumbles into more than she'd bargained for. The result is gripping, with the right balance of all those things that make a successful thriller - strong characters, believable plot and plenty of tension' (Herald Sun, Australia)

'With not one but two breathtaking climaxes, Freeman delivers a tale of intrigue and anguish. Lyrical descriptions of Minnesota's wild weather add another element to a mesmerizing mix' (The Advertiser, South Australia)

'Clever and classy' (Gold Coast Bulletin, Australia)

'This is a real page turner, with believable characters and some nice twists and changes of pace' (Sun Herald, Australia)

4.0 out of 5 stars The Watcher 29 May 2009
By molko VINE VOICE
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This is the fourth book in the Jonathan Stride series from Brian Freeman, I wont go into lots of detail concerning the plot as it has already been covered by previous reviewers here on amazon.
As I have already said this is the 4th in the series and is just as good and fast paced as the previous 3; Immoral, Stripped, and Stalked. I really enjoyed the 3rd book; Stalked and found this to not be as good as that but certainly worth the read as part of a series. I think the real drive of Freeman's books are the characters as they are all so real and relateable and beautifully developed.
One note is that this is best read as a part of the series and not as a standalone. Definately recommended

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Great Read 19 July 2010
Format:Paperback
Yet another great Crime Thriller writer I have only come across in the past six months, and have now read all his books. His style of writing is what I have found in Karin Slaughter, Mo Hayder, Val McDermid, to name but a few and his subject matter as gritty as theirs. So if you like these writers, you'll also love Brian Freeman. His lead character, Stride, has a back story which carries through the books and the storylines are gripping and will leave you wanting more. Can't wait for his next book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended 5 May 2010
Format:Paperback
I picked up The watcher in a charity shop a couple of weeks ago for 25 pence!
I'd never heard of Brian Freeman prior to this, having been an avid reader of James Paterson, Andrew Gross, Robert Ludlum, Wilbur Smith, Michael Connelly etc. over the past 30+ years.
The Watcher is one of the best novels I've ever read. The characters, the plot, the ending, all first class and more than equal to Paterson's highest standard.
Today I found Immoral, Brian's first book in the series, and I can't wait!

4.0 out of 5 stars Duluth not a quiet town-and avoid the bridge! 3 Feb 2010
By C.Elder
Format:Paperback
The setting is Duluth Minnesota. An old industrial town on the Great Lakes that has not adjusted to the end of its shipbuilding;mining etc past.An old murder case-never solved- comes back to life prompted by a reporter with a past, and a more than passing interest in what happened 30 yrs before.
Stride is drawn into it again, as it involves his high school sweetheart who became his wife, and who tragically died while still young. The author is at his best describing the long ago love affair between these 2 that led them to marriage.
A very good story(even though I guessed who the murderer was long before the end), because of the evocative descriptions of this strange town perched on the edge of the Great Lakes, and the hardy people who accept to live in these extreme weather conditions.
Well written, with some very tense moments-especially on that road bridge that allows the giant freighters to pass through the lakes.
