I was looking for a quick 'snapshot' of the Wars of the Roses, giving key dates, locations and personalities and this fitted the bill perfectly. As an adult reader, this took me a couple of hours to read and proved a great refresher for almost forgotten school lessons. As a parent, I wanted something I could give our children as a starting point for this crucial period in English history and I can see this being very useful to them. Don't expect in-depth analyses of the situations and key players but as an easily digested taster to invite further questions and exploration, it's ideal.

Bought for my grandson, aged nine, who enjoys history but needs it to be exciting. This book did the job - why didn't I have this at school?

I Love Pitkin Guides 20 Jun. 2011
By Eileen Cunningham - Published on Amazon.com
I have had a lifelong interest in the Wars of the Roses and love this little gem from Pitkin Guides, which always does a fabulous job with beautiful illustrations on glossy pages. Great eye candy--which is great for drawing in young people. I have used the Pitkin Guide for Roman Britain with 9th graders studying world history and think almost any of these guides would make a great introduction to young people and adults alike. The only drawback for use with the younger set is that the print is a bit small, but the pictures have a way of drawing everyone in. The Wars of the Roses are particularly difficult to understand because they centered on a dynastic war with lots of treachery and changing of sides, which can be confusing to those just starting out, but since this is a short introduction I believe it serves well as a first read on the topic. Alison Weir's books make a good follow-up and there are also numerous novels about this time period for those who like to have the characters fleshed out. You can't go wrong with any Pitkin guide!
