"The Warrior" has been classed as a 'coming of age' for Korean Cinema and if this is the case then I'm excited about what's to come. In an age where so many actions films seem to rely on special effects, "The Warrior" avoids this and what you see is what you get. (though there are come CG shots but you won't notice them until you watch the behind the scenes extras).
The film has so much going for it. It is visually appealling, the characters have depth, the story is strong and the fighting scenes are, well, intense. One criticism about this film that I've heard is that it's too long or too slow. Not true!! If you enjoy action films with great characters then this is the movie for you. This is no kids action film.
The extras on this 2DVD set are the best I have seen in a English-released Asian DVD. There is an hour long "Making of", a 30 minute interview with "villain" Yu Rong-Kwong, Outtakes, 30+ deleted scenes!!! Plus a good deal more.
I won't compare it to any other film because that always leads to trouble. Instead I'll say this, if you enjoy period action films that are both mentally and visually appealling, then I would certainly recommend "The Warrior". If you want a no-brainer action film, I suggest you look elsewhere.
