sax and strings 8 Jan 2010
Format:Audio CD
Such a lush and almost over the top sound. Not kitsch, but certainly a period piece. A mellow companion to the more Third Stream earnestness of Getz and Sauter's Focus of around same time.

Sax and strings is a bit like piano and vibes, has to be done right or can be tedious. The string quartet arrangements here are superior (Johnny Richards, I forger his original Hispanic name, but he is a name that interests people) This is not strings bought off the peg, but crafted stuff. Webster's sound is excellent. Piano work is very tasteful too.

Only 36 mins long, but if you can get at a competitive price, so worth it. Keep between Focus and Coltrane's Ballads album, and somewhere near Nat King Cole's classic Capitol albums.

Sheer beauty 7 Nov 2011
Format:MP3 Download|Amazon Verified Purchase
I bought the vynil version of this in about 1966 and it's so worn that I can almost play both sides at once!. It's hard to believe that someone with such a beautiful tone and wonderful sense of expression could be such a "difficult" person.

and now, for your listening pleasure...something lush. 1 May 2001
By R. Davis - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
i'm 34 years old...i grew up on late 70s and early 80s r&b and soul music and then aggressively got into hip-hop. hip hop music was the music that began to expose me to the jazz classics that seldomly became sampled in the artform. i'm grateful for that and i have been an avid collector of jazz music for 15 years now. i buy music randomly and at the spur of the moment and from many artists i have never heard of...so yes, i do own a whole lot of musical garbage! but sometimes i get lucky...like this album here. this was my first ben webster album (of which i now own five) and this one still remains my favorite. this is music for a grown spirit...it is indeed warm and quiet and lush. the first track "sweetheart..." is a little campy for me, but after that every track is a gentle, romantic dream. this cd is ideal for loving and/or relaxing. it definitely appeals to the lover in me and fits in nicely between my isaac hayes cd and maxwell cd. in fact, i think i'm gonna go play it now, pour myself a drink and see if i can't talk someone into a back rub. buy this as soon as possible, you'll enjoy it.

Just about perfect 8 Aug 2004
By T. Butler - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Actually I am not big fan of jazz mixing with strings - it seems to have a muzaky feeling to it. But.... this album is so well done, Webster's playing is so amazing, that there is no way anyone could call this muzak. The sound is excellent. It was recorded at Radio Recorders - a great sound studio that was very popular in Hollywood in the 50s. The strings are extremely lush and Webster sounds as if he is in the room with you. One additional note - Webster's signiture breathy sound is much less breathy than in later albums. Not better, not worse - just a different sound than I am used to hearing. I highly suggest this CD to any Webster fan and anyone looking for a big fat mellow sound.

Mesmerizing Tone of Ben Webster 11 Sep 2006
By Kevin J. Roberts - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
This is one of the greatest tenor players ever. The tone of his sax overcomes any hesitation you might have over orchestral arrangements, which are not bad at all. NOTE: The cover shown in the Amazon posting is not the cover that is actually presented in this edition, which actually shows the original cover, a different, and excellent, color photo. The photo in the Amazon listing is, I believe, that issued with the Discovery label reissue, which was published a few years earlier.
